White Pelicans

173

Walking the beach Sunday, I came across a flock of white pelicans feeding in an inland lake.┬áThis is my 5th year at Ft Myers Beach, but my 1st time seeing white pelicans. According to the Internet, unlike brown pelicans, which are year-round residents of Florida, white pelicans migrate to this area from October to March. Instead of diving for fish like the brown pelicans do, white pelicans swim on the surface in groups and herd the fish to shallow waters and submerge their heads to scoop up the fish. When spring approaches the white pelicans begin their journey north. This is why they are referred to as, “snowbirds”
