Footprints in the Sand
The Island Sand Paper is pleased to bring the wit and wisdom of Captain Rob Modys, outdoor enthusiast, fishing guide, beach boy and host of REEL Talk Radio (heard each week on ESPN 99.3 FM) back to our readers. Several years ago, he was responsible for bringing our readers weekly fishing reports, before health challenges led him to retire from the fishing charter life. He’s now back in the Sand Paper and full of friendly advice on enjoying the best of our coastal community.
Captain Rob will share his rich outdoor experiences in a weekly “Footprints in the Sand” column on coastal life in Southwest Florida, sharing fishing tips, destinations for great fishing or just enjoying our amazing environment, plus the people and places that make our coastal community unique.
As a beach kid, he comes by his love of beach life naturally. “I grew up in Clearwater and spent my days outdoors, playing, exploring, building forts and doing a lot of beach and pass fishing,” he explained. “We spent a good amount of time on the beach, but not so much on the water,” he said. “It was an idyllic childhood.”
Captain Rob has been exploring and fishing the Gulf of Mexico, Estero Bay waters and inlets since the late 1970’s and has fished and guided charters from Tampa Bay to Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys.
“The diversity of life here both below and above the water is fantastic. While each area of southern Florida has something special to offer, I still keep coming back to this place. These islands and the water around them feel like home,” Modys explained.
