Tucked south of Summerlin Road and just off Bass Road, is one of the newest recreation facilities in our area – the Wa-Ke Hatchee Recreation Center.
Named for the creek that cuts through the 50-acre property, Wa-Ke Hatchee is a combination of Native American names combining “cow” and “water.” The colorful name harkens back to the days when old Florida cowboys would drive their cattle to Punta Rassa to be shipped to Cuba by boat. The watering hole on this property created the last source of fresh water on the way to Punta Rassa.
The center is an innovative cooperative venture between the Lee County Schools and Lee County Parks & Recreation. Most of the building is large recreation center open to the public. The gym can be divided and is shared with Lexington Middle School during the school days and some special school events. On weekends and evenings the rec center utilizes the entire gym.
The center includes a weight room and fitness center, dance rooms, aerobic rooms, meeting rooms, computer lab/classroom and a game room. A variety of free and fee-based programs are offered, including yoga, exercise classes, dance plus Social Bridge, Mah Jongg and Euchre. For a list of all classes and programs visit the center or see bit.ly/WKHnews Stop by for a tour of the facility.
Outside the Recreation Center are two lakes, a playground, dog park, tennis courts, pickleball courts, walking trails and restrooms. The parking lot entrance is off of Bass Road.
