Lions Dessert Auction
If you are looking for a sweet, savory, scrumptious way to ring in your Holiday Season, the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club has just the event for you – the inaugural “Live Dessert Auction” on Thursday, November 21, at the Beach Baptist Church at 130 Connecticut Street at 6:30 p.m.! Tickets are $10-per-person at the door, with advance purchase available at the Greater Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce, Red Coconut RV Park, Property Medic, directly from Chairperson Lion Lara Stam at 513-255-2710, or at Eventbrite.
“One hundred percent of the Live Dessert Auction proceeds benefit the Fort Myers Beach and Lee County communities,” said Lion Lara. “In addition to all we do for Fort Myers Beach and especially its children, our little Lions Club ensures that every Lee County child receives a vision screening, along with eyeglasses if they need them with no other means. Everyone knows that the FMB Lions Club sponsors the annual Shrimp Festival the second weekend of every March, so we hope the Live Dessert Auction becomes the fundraiser that people associate us with each Fall!”
Restaurants from all over the island are donating desserts, Lion Lara stated, “so the live auction for these culinary masterpieces will be fun! Local merchants are contributing wonderful prizes as well for our Silent Auction, so you can get a head-start on your Holiday shopping, with the grand prize a one-week stay on Sanibel Island courtesy of Sanibel Island Vacations. There will be 50/50 raffles throughout the evening, with a Cash Bar offering craft beers and wine, along with Irish Coffees you can sip while savoring your delicious desserts you purchase for just a $5 donation. If you want to donate a homemade dessert, give me a call and we will arrange to pick it up.”
Special Group of People
It was actually Lion Lara’s family who came up with the “Live Dessert Auction” format. “We are brand new Lions Club members of less than six months, and after our first Shrimp Festival, we just fell in love with the Lions Club, as they are a special group of people. We wanted to come up with a second annual event to complement the Shrimp Festival, while keeping the club front-&-center in the minds of the community. When we attended the Beach Baptist Church, they did a similar Dessert Auction as a fundraiser, but it was open only to church members as a private affair, and we felt the concept had broad community appeal.”
The Lions Club chose the November 21 date, Lara explained, for two reasons. “First, it is one week prior to Thanksgiving, making it the ideal time to acquire that special dessert to treat your holiday guests after your turkey dinner, so take it home and put it in the freezer, then thaw it out for your dinner guests to enjoy. Secondly, we hope to entice new members to join, and November 21 is the night of a regular Lions Club meeting, so you will already be right into our schedule!” For additional information on the Live Dessert Auction or the FMB Lions Club, see FMBLions.com/Desserts or call Lion Lara at 513-255-2710.
Lion Lara said, “The Live Dessert Auction is important to the FMB Lions Club because it is another venue, other than the Shrimp Festival, to reach out to the island community and remind everyone of everything we do, along with recruiting new members. The Live Dessert Auction is a second forum for the FMB Lions Club to maximize our giving, to generate more donations that we can funnel back to the community organizations we regularly support, like the Choice Market. As for increasing our membership, the Shrimp Festival lasts an entire weekend, but it would stun most people to know that a small group of about ten folks produces that entire event!”
The most important way the Fort Myers Beach community can help make not only the Live Dessert Auction a success but to assist the FMB Lions Club to become bigger and better, Lion Lara emphasized, “Attend the auction yourself on November 21, while reaching out to your neighbors and bring them with you! This is why we designed the Live Dessert Auction to be affordable to everyone at just $10-a-ticket, but as a casual evening rather than a formal sit-down affair – this way, you can mingle and speak with your old friends while meeting new people as well, in a much more intimate setting than the huge Shrimp Festival. The Fort Myers Beach Lions Club puts our hearts and souls into everything we do, and the Live Dessert Auction is one more way for us to build relationships while serving the needs of our community!”
