    Around and About offer announcements, things to do, non-profit and community events on Fort Myers Beach.     Kaye Molnar, spokesperson for the reFRESH Estero Blvd and Waterline projects and President of Cella Molnar, will give a presentation on TU Jan 17 at 1:30pm at the annual membership meeting of the Friends of the Library. All are invited. The meeting will beheld in the library’s 3rd floor community room. Molnar will explain the project’s purpose and aim, answer questions and respond to concerns.


    “The Best of Broadway” will be presented Monday, January 23rd, 7pm as part of the 2017 Concert Series at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Ft. Myers Beach. The show spotlights songs from Sound of Music, Phantom of the Opera, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, and many more of the all-time great Broadway musicals. The concert features three of Southwest Florida’s top performers, Mark Sanders, Deborah Marino and Lee Van Asten. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Admission is free.      DOO WOP

    Dig out those dancin’ shoes because the 6th Annual Doo Wop Festival spins into Santini Marina Plaza on SA Jan 21 from 9am-1pm. The festival features a dance contest, your favorite oldies spun by DJ Larry from 9am-1pm, plus the Santini Fresh Produce Market, over 30 artists and crafters, Skye’s Margaritas and Blood Mary’s and some great food from the Restaurants of Santini. The main event of the day is a Dance Contest at noon that brings out the Islands’ best dancers to show off their jitterbug and shag skills at this fun event. Dancers may register on site at the DJ tent from 11 – 11:30 a.m. and request a tune, or they can call Bonnie to pre-register, 239-443-8810. The Dance Contest begins promptly at noon and all dancers must report to the DJ tent at 11:45 a.m.


    A pre-school playgroup called Leapfrogs meets once a month at the Bay Oaks Playground behind Beach Elementary School. They will meet this SA Jan 14 from 10-11am or so and will be playing games and having FUN! Call Ms. Debbie for more info 239-677-7017.


    Registration is now open for Fort Myers Beach Little League at Players age 4-16 must live or attend school within league boundaries. Online registration is preferred.     Explore the winding mangrove creeks and hidden backwaters of Estero Bay as only a kayaker can. Join this unique eco-tour guided by Dexter Norris, biologist, naturalist and Mound House Environmental Educator. Experience the abundant natural beauty of the ancient realm of the Calusa in a tandem kayak as you paddle the Estero and Hell Peckney bays. Tours conducted as per Florida Society of Ethical Ecotourism guidelines. Offered WE & SA from 9am-12pm. Cost $45/person (museum admission included). Members $15. All equipment provided. Water shoes required. Must be over age 12 and able to swim, walk over rough terrain and get in and out of a kayak and paddle for up to 3 hours.     The Riverdale Kiwanis Medieval Faire at Lakes Regional Park returns Jan 14 & 15. The Faire offers continuous entertainment, with jousting, merchants, artisans, jugglers, minstrels and magicians. Watch a live combat chess match and sword fighting. There will be children’s games and rides, plus a Royal Court and Procession.     Sing or play along as Beach Volunteer Mike, leads the group in acoustically played classics from the 60’s such as the Beatles, Everly Brothers, Motown and more. Held each TH through March 9 at 5pm at Bowditch Point Park. Free with paid parking. Meet on the deck near the parking lot.

    The Sanibel Community House is sponsoring the production on their new renovated stage! They are looking for kids ages 5-13 to audition on January 22nd at the Sanibel Community House from 11:00am to 1:00pm. To sign up for an audition time or to find out more information parents can go to CTW.LIFE. Rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons and the shows are March 31-April 7.


    The Friends of the Beach Library will host a Book Sale on SA Jan 28 from 9am-12:30pm in the parking garage under the library. Stop by for minimal prices with lots of choose from on the table.


    The January meeting of the Estero Island Garden Club will take place MO, Jan 16 at 10am at the Council headquarters at Berne Davis Botanical Garden, 2166 Virginia Ave, Fort Myers. The garden is adjacent to the Edison Ford Estates. The speaker will be Jason Beckman of Conservation 20/20; he will give a presentation and take questions on Lee County Land Management and their plans for Matanzas Pass. This information is very important to us all. Attendees are welcome to stroll the garden for a few minutes before the meeting. Anyone interested in joining the Garden Club is welcome.


    It’s time to apply for the Fort Myers Beach 59th Annual Shrimp Festival Queen Pageant! Young ladies age 16-20 from SWFL are welcome to participate; you do not need to be a FMB resident. Participation includes awards and prizes, social events, a ride atop of a Corvette convertible in the Shrimp Festival parade, pageant gift bags and community service hours for school. The Queen receives a $500 college scholarship. Applicants can enter with their own sponsor or the Lions Club will provide one. Deadline to enter is January 30, 2017.     The Fort Myers Beach Community Foundation is accepting applications for its Scholarship Fund. March 1st is the deadline for submission. The scholarship program was established to further the educational focus of the foundation and its efforts to build healthy communities through individual and family involvement and a commitment to community service. Recipients will be selected on the basis of performance in 3 key areas: Community Service, Employment and School Involvement, Written Essay and Academic and Leadership Activities.     The 8th Annual Valentine’s Day Vow Renewal Ceremony at Lovers Key State Park is now taking registrations. The February 14th event is open to only 80 couples and is expected to sell out both 10am and 3pm ceremonies. Both ceremonies will take place at the beachside gazebo and will include a Champagne toast, full brunch/lunch, coffee, cake and desserts, dancing, socializing, photo plus a special gift and door prizes.
