Live music isn’t uncommon here in Southwest Florida, nor is listening to that music on the beach while enjoying a beer or a glass of wine. So, what’s so unique about the concert on December 8th? Well, the first unique thing is that it is a Tuesday evening show that starts at 3:30pm and goes right up to sunset. Also, the concert is brought to you by Friends of Lover’s Key (FOLKS) and the Americana Community Music Association (ACMA) is unique in that it is the first live acoustic concert in Lovers Key by local talented songwriters/musicians.
The ACMA has teamed up with FOLKS to bring a great concert series featuring local songwriters. The ACMA is all about original music and even though most of the artists do perform “covers,” this series will focus on the original music by each artist. December’s artists are fairly well known around the area and as performers at the ACMA; they are singer/songwriters and will exclusively present their original songs. The music presented is acoustic-based categories like Americana, folk, roots, blues, etc. You may not recognize their songs, but that definitely doesn’t mean they’re not great. During this concert the performers will be telling stories about their songs, many of which are very amusing and entertaining even before the music starts. On their website (americanaacma.org) The ACMA states, “Our hope is that by aiding in the growth of Americana and Roots music in our area, the community at large will benefit by gaining access to high quality and original acts for performances at charitable events as well as fundraising efforts to enhance the music community at large.” There will be four concerts this season starting with the first ever on Tuesday, December 8th from 3:30-5:30. December features three local artists: Bob Covington, Boyd Baker and Bob Williams.
Bob Covington of Bonita Springs, the owner of Old Fogies and a member of the Alley Katz Band, has been performing his whole life. Covington just produced his first CD in the spring and his songs will have you laughing that his “special point of view will have you re-looking at life.” Bob’s music is a “never-boring mix of soft rock, R&B, schmaltz and humorous originals.” Boyd Baker is no stranger to Ft. Myers Beach. He was a regular for years at the old Top O’ Mast and entertained sunset viewers with his great cover song performances as a solo artist and as a member of the duos Dock Boys and Eargasm.
Baker, of Erie Pennsylvania and Naples, has performed from the Great Lakes to the Florida Keys and for this series he will be performing some of his best originals. Boyd combines classic rock, jazz and blues sounds with his upbeat tropical flair, which he featured when opening for Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffet. Boyd can be found any night of the week performing on Marco Island.
Finally, Fort Myers Beach’s own Bob Williams has a sound that is all his own. With his combination of amusing stories and great music this is going to be a great performance. The banter between the artists and their awesome sound is sure to make this the concert of the year, and the first ever at Lovers Key.
The concerts will take place in the large gazebo located on the beach at Lovers Key State Park. Music lovers are encouraged to arrive early to walk or take the tram to the gazebo and, as seating is limited to the first 80 people, you will definitely want to get there in time to get a good seat. Of course there will be beer, wine, soda and water by donation and snacks will be available for purchase. This is the real beach musical experience and it’s in our beautiful Lovers Key State Park. The best part is this is a free event with paid park entry fee. As always, the entry fees are $8 for vehicles (2-8 people), $4 for single person in vehicle and $2 for pedestrians and bicyclists. You do not want to miss this sunset event on the 8th! Future concert dates will be January 26, February 18 and March 15 and each event starts 2 hours before sunset.
