Five Islanders have qualified to be on the March 7th ballot for three seats on the Fort Myers Beach Town Council. They are Bruce Butcher, Anita Cereceda, Forrest “Butch” Critser, Joanne Shamp and Ber Stevenson.
Lorrie Wolf had initially been listed as qualified when the qualifying period ended at noon January 20th, but this was later reversed on the advice of Interim Town Attorney Dawn Lehnert when it was noticed that Wolf’s Candidate Oath was notarized, but unsigned. Wolf submitted a new, signed Candidate Oath on January 23rd when the error was discovered, but Lehnert advised Interim Town Manager Jim Steele that the lack of a signature was “not a repairable act and the oath had to be signed by noon, January 20th.” Wolf has been removed from the ballot.
Anita Cereceda and Joanne Shamp currently serve on Town Council, Cereceda elected in 2014 and Shamp appointed last month. Bruce Butcher and Ber Stevenson both ran in the March 2016 election. Forrest “Butch” Critser is a newcomer to the council ballot.
Candidates have been invited to provide candidate announcements to the Island Sand Paper outlining their goals. The Sand Paper will also ask candidates to answer “Ask the Candidate” questions during the campaign. Readers are encouraged to send letters supporting their favorite candidates, but are limited to one letter per candidate per writer. A copy of the Island Sand Paper’s Campaign Information sheet is available in our office or by email request to email@example.com.
The deadline to register to vote in this election is February 6, 2017. More information at Lee.vote or 239-LEE-VOTE.
