Last weekend’s rainy weather did not deter the many fans of sand sculpting from heading to the beach to view the creations of master sand sculptors from around the world at the 29th Annual American Sand Sculpting Championship on the beach behind Wyndham Garden Hotel. The opening weekend featured the Master Solo Division with 16 sculptures vying for the title.
1st Place was won by “Transition” by Bruce Phillips of San Diego, CA, a first time competitor in the Fort Myers Beach contest, though he has been sculpting sand for over 20 years and holds 5 world records.
2nd Place went to “It’s About Time” by Todd Pangborn of Jamestown, NY. This is Todd’s 2nd Masters competition, though he is no stranger to Fort Myers Beach events as he won one of his three Advanced Amateur State Championships right here on our sand in 2013.
The 3rd Place winner was “Independence” by Morgan Rudloff of Santa Cruz, CA, sculpting since 2007. The Sculptor’s Choice, selected by the 16 Master Sculptors themselves was “New Life” by Brian Turnbough of Mokena, IL.
The Sand Sculpting fun continues through this weekend as the Advanced Amateur and Doubles Division competitions continue as the Solo Division sculptures remain on display. The event is open each day through Sunday, November 29th from 10am-5pm. Each day is filled with activities like Quick Sand Speed Sand Sculpting, Kids Zone, Sand Vendor Village and Photo Opportunity Sculptures, plus daily sand sculpting demonstrations and lessons. Right up through Sunday afternoon, visitors will have the opportunity to watch master sculptors at work on their art. Winners will be announced at 4:30pm Sunday.
