Each summer a group of lucky Island kids get to spend a week honing their sailing skills in the back bay at the Mound House. Sponsored by Edison Sailing Center, the annual camp, now in its 10th year, teaches the fundamentals of sailing with each young sailor in their own small Optimist sailboat.
Last week steady winds all week made learning to sail a bit more difficult but 11 young sailors took on the challenge. On Thursday, the sailors sailed to Matanzas Pass Preserve to showcase the skills they learned and on Friday, parents had the opportunity to sail with their young sailors.
Instructors for this year’s Sailing Camp were Sydney Monahan, Riley Monahan, Bob Walke and Patrick Walke.
