It’s time to register for the 2019 FMB Little League Spring Baseball/Softball Season! All players ages 4-16 who live or attend school within the league boundary (see website; Beach School and Lexington Middle School are in boundary) are eligible to play. Registration is open online through Feb 16 at fmbll.com or in person: TH Jan 17 6-8pm at the Bay Oaks Concession Stand; FR Jan 18 3:30-4:30pm and SA Jan 19 10am-noon at the JP Food Store parking lot, 16871 San Carlos Blvd (Linda Loma & San Carlos Blvd).
BOAT CAPTAINS NEEDED
Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve is seeking boat captain applicants for their volunteer program. Volunteers conduct bird nest count surveys, record data and with training, captain the boat. Regardless of bird watching experience, this is a great opportunity to learn. Must have FL Boating License (if born after 1/1988) and be willing to complete a DEP Vessel Operation Test. BALLROOM DANCE LESSONS
Learn how to dance the Foxtrot, Jitterbug, Waltz, ChaCha and Electric Slide with free dance lessons that will begin with the basics of each dance and then add fancy steps. BUNCHE BEACH BIRDS
On SA Jan 12 beginning at 8am, enjoy beautiful Bunche Beach, an excellent birding site with a Bird Patrol Guide. Bunche is an excellent spot for both migrant and resident waders and shorebirds working the mudflats at low tide. Also warblers, waterfowl and raptors. The Ascension Knights of Columbus host their “Right to Life” Dinner Dance on SA Jan 12 at Ascension Parish Hall, 6025 Estero Blvd. Enjoy a catered dinner and dancing to the music of “Side-By-Side.” Tickets $25/person. Chapel by the Sea will host an Open House and Kitchen Blessing following their worship service on SU Jan 13. Join them from 11am-1pm for a reception to celebrate their total kitchen renovation. Their monthly Community Spaghetti Dinners will begin SA Feb 9 from 5-7pm.
In this special Estero Island Historic Society presentation on MO Jan 14 at 7pm at the Beach Library. Dr. Kevin McCarthy will speak about The Lighthouses of Florida. With 1800 miles of coastline, Florida boasts 29 lighthouses of many shapes and sizes. Dr. McCarthy was a member of the English Department at the University of Florida from 1969-2005 and also spent several years teaching abroad. He has published 67 books, 40 of them about Florida, including “Florida Lighthouses,” The Book Lover’s Guide to Florida,” “Thirty Florida Shipwrecks” and “Christmas in Florida.”
The Friends of the Mound House will hold their Annual Meeting on TH Jan 17 from 2-4pm at the Fort Myers Beach Woman’s Club, 175 Sterling St., FMB. All are welcome. A panel will discuss the evolution of the Mound House from inception to Grand Opening in November 2015. On the panel will be special guests Ceel Spuhler, Bill grace, Betty Simpson and Town Council Member Anita Cereceda. Refreshments provided. Annual meeting follows program.

The FMB Friends of the Arts will host their first concert in their Winter Concert Series on TH Jan 17 at 7pm when they host “Back to Chicago.” Does anyone really know what time it is? Well, it must be January with this tribute to legendary band, Chicago. You’ll feel like you’re seeing the actual band at the Propeller Lounge located at Fish-Tale Marina. The Winter Concert Series continues on February 7, when ‘The British Invasion’ will perform and on March 14, ‘The Atlantic City Boys’ will take the stage channeling Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. WOUNDED WARRIOR RIDE
Residents of The Groves RV Resort invite everyone to join them on their monthly bike ride poker run to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior program. On the 3rd Friday of each month through March, they will ride about 10 miles with a few stops. Cost is $10/ride with half going to Wounded Warriors. Registration is now open for the 2019 Putt & Pub Crawl! Get your team and sign up now for this 9 hole putt-putt golf event held in downtown FMB on SA Jan 19. Nine area non-profit organizations will benefit this year. Teams of 4 can begin at any of the 9 holes after 10am. All holes must be completed by 4:30. An afterparty with awards follows. ART SUPPORTS HISTORY
Buy local art and support the Estero Island Historic Society. Local artist Joanne Shamp has created an original watercolor painting to honor retiring EIHS Curator AJ Bassett. The Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve will conduct its monthly “By the Light of the Moon” program on MO Jan 21 beginning at 5:40pm. Awaken and sharpen your sense of smell, touch, hearing and night vision as you join two volunteers with candlelit lanterns as they guide you through the Preserve by the light of the moon. A special Friends of the Arts Winter Concert benefitting Fort Myers Beach Elementary School will be held at Fish Tale Marina on TH Jan 24 from 7-9pm. Performing will be singer-songwriters Bridgette Tatum and Sheena Brook. A South Carolina native, Tatum co-wrote the 2009 most played country song in the U.S. “She’s Country” performed by Jason Aldean. Brook, a Southwest Florida native, has created her own sound blending genres and appeared on the Spring 2017 series, “The Voice.” Tickets $25 each; available at the Beach School or at fmbarts.org.
RESTORE THE ARCHES
On SA Jan 26 from 9am – 5pm, Restore Fort Myers Beach Arches, Inc. will host “Ride The Arches”, a Poker Run for cars or motorcycles with a carnival atmosphere in Indian Creek Plaza, 17284 San Carlos Blvd, FMB. The ride begins at Bridgette’s Place. Proceeds for this charity event will help pay for 3D imaging data of the original Fort Myers Beach Arches (1924-1979). On SA Jan 12, the remaining pieces of the arch will be raised so that 3-D imaging of them can be done. This data will help to incorporate the remains of the Arches into a new Arch Project.
