Island residents gathered Saturday evening for a 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony held at Station 33 of the Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District. The front courtyard of the station is home to a 9-11 Memorial holding a piece of steel I-beam from one of the World Trade Center Towers along with several smaller pieces of metal from the tower. A flagpole and timeline of the events of September 11, 2001 are also a part of the memorial, which is open to the public at 121 Lenell Road.
Fire Chief Matthew Love addressed the attendees at the brief memorial service, moved indoors due to rain, before a memorial wreath was presented. Assistant Fire Chief Tom May, Division Chief Randy Kraus, Division Chief Ron Martin and numerous firefighters of the Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District participated in the service.
Fire district staff also participated in a Sunday morning Remembrance Ceremony at the Harborside Event Center in downtown Fort Myers along with firefighters and public safety personnel from throughout Lee County.
