Fort Myers Beach School students know what RIF stands for and eagerly await their class’ turn to head into the Media Center to celebrate Reading is Fundamental day. The RIF program was original funded by a federal grant, but when the grant was cut in 2011, the beach community and PTO stepped up to make sure the program continued in our island school. The core of RIF is that each student goes home with a new book.
As students pile into the Media Center, they listen to a short presentation on the RIF theme, this year – “Dive Into a Good Book.” They then create a craft and choose a book of their very own. RIF volunteers this year included School volunteer Kathy Delbalzo, Beach School bookkeeper Terry Jacobs and Jana & Greg Holmes (grandparents of 5th grader Coen).
