    SHRIMP FLEET BLESSING

    Everyone is invited to attend the traditional Shrimp Fleet Blessing on SU Apr 7 at 12:30pm at 1100 Shrimp Boat Lane on San Carlos Island. In addition to Pastor John Adler of St. Raphael’s Episcopal Church blessing the shrimp boats of the Erickson & Jensen and Trico fleets, there will be plenty of food vendors selling Pink Gold Shrimp and fun activities. Come join in this annual event celebrating our shrimping industry!

    PRESERVE DEDICATION

    The Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve invite the public to attend a 40th Anniversary Dedication Celebration on SA, Apr 6 at 10am at Matanzas Pass Preserve, 199, Bay Rd, FMB. The celebration will include guided tours, food, vendors, recognition of Preserve supporters and entertainment by Sheena Brook.

    CRUISERS DAY     

    Mark your calendar now for the 12th Annual Cruisers Appreciation Day on SA, Apr 6 from 12-3pm in the Matanzas on the Bay courtyard. Free admission for all with BBQ, live entertainment, drinks, door prizes and friendly Island hospitality – all to celebrate the cruisers who frequent the Fort Myers Beach mooring field.     ART GALLERY

    The Fort Myers Beach Art Association Gallery will host the Student Scholarship Show from April 6 -10. A Scholarship Awards Reception on SU, Apr 7 from 1-3pm is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. This exhibit contains works from college bound seniors from Cypress Lake Center for the Arts and Cypress Lake High School, plus artwork by Lexington Middle School students. Judging will be by Anita Putnam and Carolyn Johns. The Summer Art Show will begin April 17. The FMBAA Gallery is located at 3030 Shell Mound Blvd, FMB. Hours are MO – SA 10am – 3pm through April 13. Summer Hours begin April 17, when the Gallery is open WE & TH from 9am – noon. Free admission.

    SHRIMP DINNER

    Enjoy our area’s finest delicacy, Gulf Pink Shrimp, at the last monthly Shrimp Dinner of the season offered at Historic St. Raphael’s Episcopal Church, 5601 Williams Dr. on SA Apr 6 from 5-7pm. All you can eat GULF shrimp, homemade cole slaw, baked beans & cornbread. Beverages available. $20/per person.

    BEACH KIWANIS

    The FMB Kiwanis Club meets three times each month at Bonita Bill’s Waterfront Cafe. Address: 702 Fisherman’s Wharf Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931. Meeting dates and times are set to fit the schedules of all members and guests who want to know more about Kiwanis.     FLORIDA IN THE CIVIL WAR

    Join the Estero Island Historic Society on Mo, Apr 8 at 7pm for a free presentation, “Florida in the Civil War? Believe it!” by Eliot Kleinberg. Learn about Florida’s role in the Civil War blockade, its critical battles, the tragedy of the governor, the veterans who founded many Florida cities and how some people are still fighting the war. And was the war the reason Florida now has 21 million people?

    KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP

    Beach Elementary School is looking for Kindergarten students on Estero Island or San Carlos Island who will be 5 years of age by September 1, 2019. They will hold their Annual Kindergarten Round-Up for the 2019-20 School Year at Fort Myers Beach Elementary School on Tuesday, April 9 from 9:30 am – 11 am. If your Kindergarten-aged child will be attending Fort Myers Beach Elementary for the 2019-20 School Year, please call the school office at 239-463-6356 to let them know you would like to join them for Roundup.

    EIHS GARDEN PARTY

    The Estero Island Historic Society has announced its first Garden Party fundraiser and celebration to be held on SA Apr 13 from 10am – 1pm at the Historic Cottages, 161 Bay Road, FMB. Beautiful homemade quilts by EIHS Board Member Ann Alsop will be available for purchase, plus unique crocheted handcrafts. Enjoy lemonade & cookies as you browse.

    BEAUTIFICATION BREAKFAST

    Join Keep Lee County beautiful (KLCB) at a networking event on SA Apr 13 from 8-9am at Lovers Key State Park. Enjoy a light breakfast as you connect with local businesses, individuals, organization and community leaders interested in keeping Lee County a pristine place to live, work and play. Following breakfast, attendees may participate in a Global Youth Service Day cleanup. Free lunch provided for clean-up volunteers. RSVP by email to Tisha@klcb.org. 

    LIONS SCHOLARSHIPS

    The Fort Myers Beach Lions Club is now accepting applications for their “We Serve” scholarships. Applications can be downloaded at fmblions.com under Lions Services. Last year $1,000 scholarships were awarded to 10 recipients. Local students going on to college or vocational school are eligible to apply. This year two special awards will be granted: The Shirley Semmer Award and The Fred Schmiesing Award, each a little more than other awards. Applications must be submitted by May 15.

    BRIDGE 

    The Woman’s Club of FMB invites all bridge players to join them every TU & FR from 9:30am to 2:30pm for a day of social bridge. Bring a bagged lunch and enjoy good company and great bridge. Cost: $3. Proceeds support community activities.

    LIFE IN THE MANGROVES

    Discover the diverse plants and animals of this mangrove preserve in this guided walk through the Matanzas Pass Preserve. Offered every TH at 9:30-11am through April. Free with free parking. 199 Bay Rd, FMB.

    OIL SPILL CLASS

    The Ostego Bay Oil Spill Co-op will offer a Hazardous Material Technician Certification Class on April 22, 23 & 25. Any first responder or volunteer that handles hazardous waste must be certified to do so. This mandatory O.S.H.A. CFR 1910/120 training will be held at the Ostego Bay Marine Science Center. The 8-hour recertification will be offered on Apr 25 at Salty Sam’s Marina. Cost for the full class is $300 for Ostego Bay Oil Spill Co-op members and $350 for non-members. The refresher course cost is $100 members; $150 non-members. Registration and payment are required in advance by contacting Joanne Semmer at 239-470-4993.

    BEACH KIDS SCHOLARSHIPS

    REELING FOR AUTISM

    Family Initiative, Inc, a SWFL nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and families dealing with autism, will hold a fishing tournament and silent auction on SA Apr 27 at Nervous Nellie’s. The family-friendly event will feature live music and raffles 11am – 6pm; a silent auction 11am-4pm and an opportunity for families of children with autism to connect with each other. The Fishing Tournament will run from 7:30am – 3:30pm and the 1st Place winner will receive $1,500; 2nd Place $1,000 and 3rd Place $500.     YOGA AT THE GAZEBO

    Friends of Lovers Key State Park offers Yoga at the beach Gazebo every MO morning at the park at 9:30am through May. Instructor Sandy McShane offers an hour of Open Vinyasa Flow. $10/class plus park entry fee. Participation helps support the future Welcome & Discovery Center.
