We hear it every season: “what are some fun and interesting things to do?” Most of the time, you can’t go wrong with most of the great attractions at Ft. Myers Beach, but Friends of Lovers Key (FOLKS) have come up with some fun activities that are different from the “same ol’ same ol’”.

One event that has already been a great success with its first installment is the Songwriters at Sunset concert series. FOLKS joined forces with the Americana Community Music Association (ACMA) to bring a series of monthly FREE acoustic concerts of all original music to Lovers Key State Park. As stated, the first concert was huge success and drew a crowd of 130 people who got to enjoy some great original music from local artists while watching an amazing sunset at Lovers Key. This month’s scheduled concert will feature three very entertaining local musicians; David Hintz, Kip Lawrence and Mike McMillan.

David Hintz, a singer-songwriter from North Fort Myers, has been writing songs and playing small gigs for many years. He currently works as a solo performer and has 2 CD’s: “Rode Hard and Put Away Wet”(2013) and “Out With a Bang”(2015). Hintz’s songs follow in the tradition of John Prine, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and many other folk music legends.

Kip Lawrence is a singer-songwriter living in Matlacha who formerly performed with the nationally touring act, the Yard Dogs. The band released 11 CD’s in 10 years, performing original “Florida Swamp” music for their fans all over the world. Lawrence founded both the SW Florida Songwriters Fest with Drew Reid and the SW Florida Blues Fest. As a solo performer, Kip brings the infectious humor that was associated with his band. His ballads also bring a self-penned fingerstyle only found when Lawrence plays on the six-string guitar or banjo.

Finally, the third musician lives right here on Ft. Myers Beach. Mike McMillan retired to the beach after working and playing in bands in Michigan. Mike spends his mornings walking the beach but his afternoons are spent working on his craft as a “student” blues guitarist. McMillan brings out his inner storyteller, not only in his music but also before he plays a note, taking the time to give the background on his original songs and explain the stories behind the old blues classics.

The Songwriters at Sunset Concert takes place on the beach at Lovers Key State Park in the large gazebo on Tuesday, January 26th, from 4pm-6pm. Be sure to arrive early as seating is available for the first 80 people. Even if you can’t get there in time for the gazebo seating be sure to bring your own lawn chairs for additional seating. The concert is free with paid park entry. The parking fees are $8 for vehicles (2-8 people), $4 for single people in vehicles, and $2 for pedestrians and bicyclists.
