The All-Day Fun Fest & BBQ feast that Islanders know and love as Popeyepalooza returns to the beach to benefit Island youth sports leagues on Sunday, May 21 at the Beach Pub beginning at noon. This year’s 8th annual event will feature live music by Soulixer, Tommy V, 10,000 Views, Heavy Weather and Mark Appleby along with prizes, raffles, silent auctions and of course, great Popeye BBQ.
For just $10/plate, attendees will get ribs, chicken BBQ baked beans, pasta salad and rolls. Popeyepalooza VIII hats and t-shirts will be available starting at $10. A big hit every year are the silent and live auctions. Some of the prizes this year include original Casey’s Alley art by Geoffrey Schofield, a Budweiser Beach Cruiser bike, hotel stays and a beach treasure chest donated by Diversified Yacht Services’ ships store.
To date, Mike “Popeye” Dearden, organizer and namesake of this annual party for good, says the event has raised over $18,000, with $4,000 raised just last year.
“The people of this community are some of the most generous, giving, and fun loving people I’ve seen in all my travels,” he said last year after Popeyepalooza VII. “You came to help us raise money for the children of the community, and that shows more heart and character than many exhibit in a growingly apathetic global society.”
Businesses or individuals wishing to donate prizes for the auction are asked to call Popeye at 239-244-4437.
The Beach Pub is located at 1668 I Street, Fort Myers Beach. Turn toward the Gulf at Avenue E, just across from Key Estero Shops. Parking is limited, so take the bus, walk or ride your bike, but don’t miss this annual beach event Sunday, May 21, all for a good cause!
