Each year for the past 10, a group of seniors from the Groves RV Resort have ridden bicycles on a poker run once a month to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. This event has grown each year, raising a total of $17,678.
As our numbers have grown so has the safety of our riders become an issue. Especially having a large number of riders crossing San Carlos Blvd. at Pine Ridge Rd. Even though we cross with the pedestrian light, cars making a left turn on green from Pine Ridge during the bikes’ crossing has become a serious safety issue.
We contacted Deputy Chief Ron Martin of the Fort Myers Beach Fire Department and he agreed that it would be best if the intersection was blocked for the 15-20 seconds that it takes to get all riders safely across.
We would like to thank Chief Martin, Deputy Fire Marshal Jennifer Campbell, Inspector Ben Noell and the firefighters of Station 32 for their assistance in keeping us safe. They did a great job with no complications. The FMB Fire Dept has great people!
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office and Sgt Dominic Konieczki and his traffic control unit were also very helpful and we thank them.
Our next run will take place in November. We will be in touch with Chief Martin and Sgt Konieczki far enough in advance to plan the crossing.
Our sincere thanks to all the FMB firefighters and the LCSO!
