NCAA Bowl Games

Florida played a good first half and looked like they might even go into half-time with the lead last Saturday. A safety figured into the second game in a row for the Gators, but this time it was the opponent that scored the 2-pointer. Early in the second quarter the Gators got a huge contribution from their special teams when Antonio Callaway returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown, putting them in the lead 7-2. Alabama moved the ball well, but could only manage a 28-yard field goal. However, on their next possession, a two-yard touchdown by the Tide’s Derrick Henry put Alabama in the lead for good. Alabama cruised into the playoffs with a 29-15 victory over the Gators, who dropped from #12 to #19 in the final standings. The Gators will face #14 Michigan in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Alabama became the first team since Tennessee in 1998 to win two straight SEC titles. That is quite a feat, but it’s definitely not their ultimate goal. After an upset loss to Mississippi in mid-September, the Tide won 10 straight and now #2 Alabama finds themselves in the Cotton Bowl against #3 Michigan St on New Year’s Eve. The Spartans advanced to the semifinal playoff game by defeating Iowa in the Big Ten Conference championship game. Iowa was undefeated before what was basically a play-in game against Michigan St. and the loss dropped Iowa from #4 to #5. The Spartans had a lot to do with how the Big Ten teams finished the season. MSU knocked Ohio St from the ranks of the unbeaten and eliminated the Buckeyes from the playoffs. #7 OSU will face #8 Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

The Iowa Hawkeyes may not be in the playoffs, but they have a matchup in the Rose Bowl that rivals the “semifinal bowls.” #6 Stanford earned their trip to face Iowa in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day by defeating USC in the PAC-12 Title Game, 41-22. #25 Southern Cal will make their second straight visit to the Holiday Bowl against #23 Wisconsin.

The other semifinal playoff game will feature the only undefeated playoff team: #1 Clemson against #4 Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Eve. Oklahoma was able to hold onto their playoff position despite not playing a conference championship game. Lastly, coming off a victory over the Gators, #9 Florida State will face ACC Champion #18 Houston in the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
