Something Old & Something New

The Mound House, Estero Island’s oldest standing structure now owned by the Town of Fort Myers Beach and restored to its 1921 ambiance, is the community’s cultural and environmental learning center. In addition to the site itself, it offers a variety of programs for residents and visitors, with new offerings as well as several others carried over from June that continue throughout the Summer.

New programs include Family Adventures at The Mound House. Explore everything fun at the Mound House, as interpretive staff lead families through an entertaining and educational experience they will not soon forget! Ideal for families with children age 5 & up. “Family Adventure” is Wednesday, August 2, at 2 p.m.; Saturday, August 5, at 10 a.m.; Tuesday, August 8, at 2 p.m.; and Tuesday, August 15, at 1 p.m.; $5, with Mound House members free.

Jewelry Making: Calusa Style examines how the Calusa Indians used natural materials to make clothing, jewelry and rope. Create your own beautiful shell bracelet by using the same methods as the Calusa; great for families and visitors age 6 & up. Wednesday, August 9, at 10 a.m.; $5, with Mound House members free.

Food, Fortunes, Medicines, & Poisons details how plants have the potential to feed, cure and sometimes harm. Tour the Mound House gardens to explore over 100 plants and trees from around Florida and the entire planet that influence human history. Learn how one of the most poisonous plants became a Native American food staple. Wednesday, August 16, at 10 a.m.; $5, with Mound House members free.

The following successfully debuted in June and continue.

Family Fun Kayak Tour is for parents and their children. Look for wildlife including birds, dolphins and manatees. The trip is great for kids and first-time kayakers, with instruction on land before heading out on the water at an easy, relaxed pace. $15 ages 6 to 12, $25 all others, & $10 members, includes museum admission, kayak and all equipment. Saturday, July 1; Thursday, July 13; Saturday, July 22; Friday, July 28; Wednesdays, August 2 & 9; and Saturday, August 19, all at 8:30 a.m., with advance reservations necessary at 239-765-0865.

Counting on The Mound is for ages 3 to 5 on Tuesdays, July 11 & August 8, at 10 a.m. One house, three trees, eight shells – there sure are a lot of things to count at the Mound House! A craft, activities, and walk make practicing your counting skills fun. $2, members free.

Calusa Indian Pottery allows you to explore the ceramics of Southwest Florida and the Calusa Indians in a hands-on way on Saturday, July 15 and Tuesday, July 25, at 10 a.m. Make and decorate your own clay pottery while learning how the Calusa and other indigenous people made ceramics. $10 age 6 to 12, $15 age 13 & up, members free; includes museum admission.

Breakfast on The Beach is with biologist Dexter Norris at Newton Beach Park on Fridays, July 21 & August 18, at 8:30 a.m. Dexter, the Environmental Educator for the Mound House, presents a fun and interesting lecture, followed by a beach walk to learn about the natural environment. The program includes a healthy breakfast in the Newton Cottage at 4650 Estero Boulevard. $15-per-person, with reservations necessary.

Crafting With Nature is for ages 6 & up with adult guardians on Saturdays, July 22 & August 19, at 11 a.m. Get dirty with hands-on arts-&-crafts. $5; members free.

Scents of The Garden is Wednesdays, July 26, at 10 a.m., & August 30 at 11 a.m. Discover various scents, strategies plants use to attract pollinators, and create your own natural potpourri. $5, members free.

Mound House admission is $10 for ages 13 & up, $8 for students with IDs, $5 ages 6 to 12, and 5 & under free, with Fort Myers Beach residents receiving a 50% discount. It is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the summer. The Mound House is at 451 Connecticut Street, with additional parking at 216 Connecticut.
