Memorial Day

Begun as Decoration Day following the Civil War as a day to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers, Union and Confederate holiday traditions were later merged to become Memorial Day in the 20th century. Celebrated on May 30th for years, the celebration of Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday in May in 1971, though some veteran groups continue to lobby for the return to the traditional May 30th date.

Set aside as a day to honor the men and women who died while serving our country, Memorial Day is marked by solemn ceremonies, flag raisings, parades and laying flowers on veteran gravesites. Locally, our community has three active veteran organizations, each of which will be holding a Memorial Day ceremony at 11am Monday, May 30th. The public is welcome to attend all of them.
