In a brief meeting Tuesday evening, the Board of Directors of the Fort Myers Beach Library heard reports on library usage reflecting an increasingly busy season and said goodbye to Jack Green who has served on the board since last January 2015.
Green submitted his resignation earlier this year, effective March 1, 2016 as required by Florida’s ‘resign to run’ rules. He is a candidate for Fort Myers Beach Town Council. Alison Throckmorton who also joined the Library Board in January 2015, resigned in April 2015. A request for an appointment to fill her seat has been pending in Governor Rick Scott’s office since June 2015. Scott will be asked to appoint someone to fill Green’s seat also. Those two appointees will serve the remainder of the terms-through November 2018. This November, three other seats will be on the ballot, those currently held by Sallie Seabury, Lorrie Wolf and Miffie Greer.
The library has seen an increase in usage the past few weeks, with over 1100 patrons in the library on ten days between February 1-22. January saw 39 adult programs in the Community Room with 788 attendees. Five children’s programs drew 91 attendees. January also saw heavy usage of the library’s computers and Wi-Fi service.
Library Director Leroy Hommerding reported that donations of $1,525 were received during January for the Library Development Fund. He also reported that the family restroom on the 3rd floor is now locked, with access by request only due to extensive damage done in the room in the last 6 months. He noted that all restroom facilities in the building are ADA compliant.
The February Friends of the Library Book Sale was a success with many books sold. Hommerding asked for volunteers to assist with the March 19th book sale. Set up help is needed at 10:30am on March 18th and help packing up books beginning at 12:30pm on March 19th. Anyone who can help is asked to contact Dr. Hommerding at the library.
At the end of the meeting, Hommerding presented Green with a plaque and thanked him for his service to the Library with Board members concurring.
The next Library Board meeting will be held March 22, 2016 at 6:30pm in the Community Room of the Beach Library, 2755 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach.
