At their monthly meeting Tuesday evening, the Library Board voted to retain their officers for the coming year: President Sallie Seabury; Vice-President Debbie Whitehead; Secretary Mark LaFave and Treasurer Miffie Greer.
Jack Green announced his resignation effective March 1st. Green is running for a seat on the Fort Myers Beach Town Council in the March 15th election.
During the Library Director’s report, Dr. Leroy Hommerding told the board that the library had received donations of $12,000 for non-fiction titles, plus $1,606 for the Library Development Fund and $275 in memorial donations since the last board meeting in November. In November and December a total of 52 programs were offered in the Community Room attended by 519 people. New library cards were issued to 191 patrons.
Lorrie Wolf announced that the Friends of the Library would hold their annual meeting on January 30, 2016 at 11am.
During general public comment, Alissa Brashares said she holds a Charlotte County library card and complained that it did not give her privileges at the Beach Library. She also voiced several other complaints including that the Community Room was not open to patrons. She indicated that she needed a quiet place to study with Wi-Fi access and implied that lack of that access caused her to lose a scholarship. She also told the board that the front doors were locked during a recent storm and she had to enter through the parking garage.
Board members responded by explaining that the Community Room is used by paid reservation only and is not open to the public. The Library’s front doors are locked for safety reasons during high wind events, as they do not close. A solution is in the works for that problem. If she was unable to produce proof of local residence for a free library card, she was invited to purchase a visitor card for $10 to enjoy the same privileges as other cardholders.
The next Library Board meeting is scheduled for February 23, 2016 at 6:30pm in the Community Room of the Beach Library, 2755 Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach.
