Groundbreaking for the LeeTran Beach Park & Ride complex on 5.5 acres at the corner of Summerlin Square Road and Pine Ridge Road took place Monday, March 6. Representatives from Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce, LeeTran, Lee County Commission, Florida Department of Transportation, (FDOT), the architects and construction managers were all in attendance. The project was initiated March 13, 2007 by the Board approval of a grant from FDOT to develop the project.
Jacki Liszak, President of the Greater Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce spoke to the group assembled thanking all those who helped make this project happen. “This benefits the FMB business community, residents, and visitors,” Liszak said. “Parking for beach business employees has been a challenge for years, and this helps. Any amenity that can possibly reduce the traffic in our community is welcome.”
The goal is for the complex to be open before the 2018 season.
This complex will replace an existing and inadequate bus stop and transfer operations currently on private property on Summerlin Square Road. The previous Park and Ride area was on nearby property now developed and occupied by Walmart along San Carlos Blvd. The new facility will provide a safe and convenient environment for passengers and tourists to park their cars and ride the trolley to the Beach.
