From the shady depths of the RV parks, it is time for senior snowbirds to emerge and don their bright yellow shirts, take to their bicycles and ride the streets and bike paths of south Fort Myers to benefit those brave men and women who have been wounded serving their country. It’s the Groves RV Resort WWP Bike Ride!
This will be their 7th year and organizers are proud to say they’ve raised over $8,000 in their first 6 years for the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). Hoping to break the $10,000 total this year, they invite area bicycle riders to join them.
Starting from Groves RV Resort on John Morris Road between McGregor Blvd and Iona Rd, the ride is held the third Friday of each month November-April. It’s a 10-mile poker ride, so riders draw cards at five locations: Ron Dao’s, Pickle ‘n Pub, Bayside Grill and Valerie’s Lounge before ending up at Busters.
Anyone over 21 is welcome to join them. Cost is just $10 per ride, half of which goes to WWP with the other half going to the poker prizes. The safety yellow shirts are in high demand and make riders visible on the road, are just $15, $8 of which goes to the WWP.
The December ride will be held on December 16th. Meet at Groves RV Resort at 12:30pm and be ready to have a good time.
If you can’t join them, watch for the pack of yellow-shirted bike riders, some of whom are in their 80’s and cheer them on. Rides are also scheduled for January 20, February 17, March 17 and April 21. Mark your calendars and plan to join the fun.
