Island kids have found a summer pastime that brings about 40 of them to Bay Oaks every Monday and Thursday nights – basketball! Kids from 5-14 make their way to Bay Oaks twice a week for some fun on the court as Bay Oaks staff teach basketball fundamentals and run drills every Monday night and then on Thursday nights the kids use those new skills in games. The difference from a regular league is that teams are formed anew each Thursday, so they’re all teammates! There are two age groups with about 20 players in each group.
Jimmy Demilia of Bay Oaks Recreation Center said that basketball has not been this popular for a while at the center and the kids and staff all seem to love it.
“Using the instructional time on Monday and the game time on Thursday makes it fun for everyone.”
Last year the summer basketball league was eliminated due to the pending gym floor replacement. With that replacement put on hold, the gym is available this summer. One parent commented that the popularity of the program is a good indicator of how the community supports and utilizes Bay Oaks.
Open Basketball for Kids is held every Monday and Thursday from 6-7:30pm at Bay Oaks Recreation Center. For more information, contact Bay Oaks at 239-765-4222.
