    Around & About the Island offers announcements for non-profit and community events on and around Fort Myers Beach.     The Estero Island Taxpayer’s Association will host a Meet the Candidate event on MO Feb 20 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Fort Myers Beach Woman’s Club, 175 Sterling Ave. All are welcome to attend.


    The Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce will hold a Candidate Forum on TH, Mar 2 from 6:3-0-8:30pm in the Fish Tale Marina Propeller Room, 7225 Estero Blvd, behind Santini Marina Plaza. All are welcome to attend.


    The 6th Annual Fort Myers Beach Got Talent contest will be held on Sat., Feb 18th at Santini Marina Plaza. All are invited to this event that runs from 9am-1pm and includes an artisan market with 30+ local artisans, many providing on-site demonstrations, plus the Santini Fresh Produce Market and food & beverage offered by Santini Restaurants and Big Papa BBQ. The talent contest begins at Noon, with contestants asked to pre-register by calling Bonnie at 239-443-8810. Contestants must report to the stage tent by 11:30am.     Bring your car for a drive-through safety assessment. TU Feb 21 from 9am-noon at Chapel by the Sea. Sponsored by the Lee County Sheriff’s Community Relations. Program is designed to help older drivers find out how well they currently fit their personal vehicle, highlight actions they can take to improve their fit and promote conversations about driver safety. Each “carfit” takes about 20 min. Free and open to the public.


    The St. Peters Lutheran Concert Series presents a special evening of music with the Ave Maria University Choir on MO, Feb 27 at 7pm. The performance by the acclaimed 30-voice choral group will feature Broadway selections including a medley from The Phantom of the Opera, as well as inspirational and patriotic favorites.     Travel back through time with Visions of the Past on SA Feb 25 from 9am-1pm. Your guide will lead you along the trail to visit and hear from the Calusa Indians, Spaniards, Explorers, Pirates, Homesteaders, Koreshans and Pioneers of Estero Island/Fort Myers Beach. Experience facts, folklore and customs of these bygone eras. Free guided walks are held every 20 min starting at 9am. Reservations strongly encouraged.     The 10th Annual Fat Tuesday John Donovan Benefit will be held on TU Feb 28 at The Cottage, 1270 Estero Island. Benefitting the Gulf coast Humane Society, there will be live music from 2pm-1am plus raffle prizes, Cajun food and drinks specials.

    This year’s Fort Myers Beach Friends of the Arts Winter Concert Series is going to be is better than ever. The Friends, whose mission is to promote and support theater, music, culinary and visual arts on Fort Myers Beach and the surrounding community with a vision to make the arts on Fort Myers Beach accessible for all to enjoy and discover, look forward to offering some great entertainment this season. February 24 means it’s time to catch a wave with coastal sounds of Beach Boys-related California Surf, Inc. Demand for this Naples-based, father and son led-band, Paul Todd and Paul Todd, Jr. brings them back to the Island on March 30. Finally, to bring it on home will be the first ever Southwest Florida appearance of the Atlantic City Boys singing the crooning tunes of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons on April 20.     The 59th Fort Myers Beach Lions Club Shrimp Festival is approaching fast! On SA Mar 4th the one-mile free Kids Shrimp Run will take place on the beach. On SA Mar 11, the 5K Shrimp Fest Run in cooperation with the Cypress Lake High School Athletic Booster Club, will begin at 9am at Doc Ford’s. Runners and walkers welcome. To register visit and search ‘shrimp run.” The Parade will begin SA March 11 at 10am at Bay Road and end at Lynn Hall Park where the Food and Crafts EXPO and Shrimp dinners will be available. The Shrimp Festival Queen will be crowned at 1pm in the park. The Expo and Shrimp Dinners continue on SU Mar 12, plus the Shrimp Eating Championship will be held at 1pm.     Those wondering when the St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held will be happy to learn that it will be held on FR Mar 17. Parade begins at 10am in Santini Plaza and marches to Church of the Ascension. Pre-party begins at 8am at Santini Plaza. Watch for more details soon.
