    Around and About the Island offers announcements for non-profits and community events on and around Fort Myers Beach. Make sure you pick up a copy of the SAND LIFE Entertainment Magazine for a calendar listing of all the fun things to do on the Island. Both The Island Sand Paper and SAND LIFE magazine are available FREE online.

     BRIDGE & ROAD CLOSURES

    The Matanzas Pass Bridge and Estero Blvd from Lovers Lane to the bridge on the north end of the island will be closed from 9am-noon on SA Mar 11 for Shrimp Festival.

    On FR Mar 17, Estero Blvd will be closed from 9:45-11:45am from Santini Marina Plaza to Church of the Ascension on the south end of the island.

     BEAUTIFUL BIRDS OF BUNCHE BEACH

    Experience the birds of Bunche Beach with a Bird Patrol Guide on SA Mar 11 at 7:30am or TH Mar 30 at 5:30pm. Bunche is an excellent spot for both migrant and resident waders and shorebirds working the mudflats at low tide. Also waterfowl, raptors and warblers. Free with paid parking. Bring binoculars, sunscreen, shoes that can get wet, water and your love of nature. For more info call 239-707-3015

     MOON WALK

    The Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve will host their monthly ‘Moon Walk in the Preserve’ on SU Mar 12 at 7:15pm. This experiential hands-on program will awaken and sharpen participant’s senses of smell, touch, hearing and night vision. Join two volunteers carrying candle-lit lanterns through the Preserve as night descends and celebrate the darkness and the moon. Meet at the entrance to the Preserve behind the Historical Cottage on Bay Street. Program is free, but pre-registration is required. Adults only. Limited to 12 participants.      HOUSE OF WORSHIP SAFETY

    The Beach United Methodist Church invites the public to join them for a Lee County Sheriff’s Department presentation of “House of Worship Safety on MO Mar 13 at 9:30am in the church. 239-463-9656.

     FINDING UTOPIA

    Join the Estero Island Historic Society on MO Mar 13 at 7pm at the Beach Library 3rd floor Community Room for a public presentation of “Finding Utopia: Estero, A Dream or an Ideal” by 5th generation Floridian Woody Hanson. He will discuss the Koreshan’s effort to incorporate in 1904 and contrast that with Estero’s recent successful incorporation effort. Hansen is the great-great-grandson of the Gonzalez family, Fort Myers first permanent settlers. Free and open to the public. Donations accepted.

     EVENING WITH LARRY KIKER

    Join the Estero Island Taxpayers Association on TU Mar 14 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Fort Myers Beach Woman’s Club, 175 Sterling, for a discussion of key issues that affect our island. Bring your questions and concerns and learn about county plans for the future.

    FRIENDS OF THE MOUND HOUSE

    The Friends of the Mound House will hold their Annual Meeting on TH Mar 16 at 4pm at Newton Park, 4650 Estero Blvd., Punch will be served. All are welcome. The Friends will elect officers and directors (1-year terms). Nominations may be made from the floor. Mound House Environmental Coordinator Dexter Norris will give a presentation on local snakes.

    ST. PAT’S DAY PARADE

    The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on FR Mar 17. Parade begins at 10am in Santini Plaza and marches to Church of the Ascension. That section of Estero Blvd will be closed from 9:45-10:45am. Pre-party begins at 8am at Santini Plaza. Call Ray Murphy to register your parade entry 239-591-8803.      MEMORY MOBILE VISIT

    St. Peter Lutheran Church will host a visit by the Memory Mobile Friday, Mar 17 from 10am-3pm. A service of the Alzheimer’s Association, free and confidential memory screenings will be conducted.      SMOKIN’ IN THE MANGROVES

    Don’t miss one of the island’s tastiest events, Smokin’ in the Mangroves BBQ Competition, on SA Mar 18 at Santini Marina Plaza. Both pros and amateurs will compete in ribs, chicken and pork divisions. Attendees will chose a People’s Choice winner. BBQ plates and sandwiches will be available for purchase. Music by Bugtussle Ramblers. Event will include an Artisan vendor market with 30+ local artists, the Santini Fresh Produce market and cocktails by Skye’s. The event is from 9am-3pm with BBQ awards presented at 1pm. Donations of pet food and supplies will be welcomed at the FindAHome-GiveAHome tent. 239-443-8810.

    ST. PATRICK’S DINNER DANCE

    The Knights of Columbus will host their annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner & Dance on SA Mar 18 in the Church of the Ascension Parish Hall. Live music for listening and dancing by Side-by-Side. Doors open at 5:30pm. Public Welcome. Tickets $25 & available at the gazebo after weekend Masses, at the door or by calling Peter at 239-284-6516

     ITALIAN DINNER

    All are invited to the monthly Italian Dinner at Chapel by the Sea Silver Hall. This month the dinner has been moved to Mar 18th from 5-7pm to avoid conflicts with Shrimp Fest. Come for Spaghetti, meatballs, spicy sausage w/peppers and onions, salad, garlic bread, dessert and drinks. All are welcome. Just $10/adults; $5/kids 10 and under; $5/Public Safety Personnel in uniform or w/ID.

    FREE GUIDED BEACH WALKS

    Each week Lee County Parks and the Town of Fort Myers Beach offers free walks with a trained naturalist. No registration needed, just show up and learn something about our environment! All walks are from 9:30-11am unless otherwise noted.

    PARADISE COASTMEN CONCERT

    Enjoy a fun-filled musical evening with Southwest Florida’s premier Barbershop chorus on TU Mar 21 at 7:30pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 3751 Estero Blvd, FMB.     WOUNDED WARRIOR RIDE

    Residents of The Groves RV Resort invite everyone to join them on their last monthly bike ride poker run to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior program. On March 24th, they will ride about 10 miles with a few stops. Cost is $10/ride with half going to Wounded Warriors. To participate, bring your bike to The Groves lot 228 at 12:30pm to sign in.     BLOOMIN’ GOOD GARAGE SALE

    Help support the Estero Island Garden Club and the good work they do beautifying and supporting our community by attending their annual fundraiser garage sale. This year it will be a triple-play sale on SA Mar 18 from 8am-1:30pm in the cul-de-sac at the end of Clearview Blvd in Fairview Isles. Look for treasures of designer clothes, pillows, high-end household goods, holiday décor, jewelry, books, CD’s, purses and more! Garden Club projects include The Beach School Box and Butterfly Gardens, Beach Library Christmas decorations, summer camp scholarships, Bay Oaks garden, FMB welcome sign flowers and Time Square flowers/pots. Support the Garden Club and help them make Fort Myers Beach Bloom!

    BIG BAND CONCERT

    Enjoy an evening of traditional big band music with the 19-piece Memory Makers Big Band at Chapel by the Sea’s Silver Hall on Mar 24 at 7pm. Memory Makers concentrate on dance music from the 1920-s through today. Free will offering.

    LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

    Sign up now for the Town’s Leadership Conference sponsored by the Cultural Resources Advisory Committee to be held on Apr 7 & 8. The 2-day conference is open to anyone, full time or seasonal residents. Learn about our Town’s unique resources. Learn more about the Town, Fire Dept., Lee County, the Sheriff’s Office and more!
