FMB Kiwanis Club Meeting

On January 24, the Ft Myers Beach Kiwanis Club members gathered at Bonita Bill’s Waterfront Cafe for a regular monthly dinner meeting. This was much more than a regular meeting, as Club members were mourning the sudden tragic death of their beloved member, Dr. Leroy Hommerding. Dr. Leroy was a member of this group for many years, and was serving as Club Secretary, Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, and as a regular volunteer every Saturday at the club’s busy Thrift Shop. The group observed silence and made plans to attend the memorial service at the FMB Library.

During this meeting the club members received a positive message at this sad time. They hosted two very special guests from the Uncommon Friends Foundation, a charity established by community leaders to promote the values portrayed by several friends of James Newton, a Ft Myers business man and resident who owned a beach front cottage as well. Newton’s good friends included Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Charles Lindbergh, and Dr. Alexis Carrel and their wives. Foundation guests were Jennifer Nelson, Executive Director and Dr. Karen Serrell, foundation member, shown here with Kiwanis President Roger Welton.

Upcoming Ft Myers Beach Kiwanis Club meetings are: Lunch – Friday Feb 15 at 11:30 a.m. and Dinner – Thursday, Feb 15 at 5:30 p.m. All meetings are currently held at Bonita Bills.

The FMB Kiwanis Club owns and operates the successful Kiwanis Thrift Shop at the corner of Summerlin Rd and Pine Ridge Rd. at Ft Myers Beach. Proceeds are used for club philanthropic projects including the annual Fun Run, Golisano Children’s Hospital, God’s Table, needy families, Little League, Scholarships, Beach School Library, sponsoring the S Ft Myers High School Key Club, Ft Myers Beach Elementary School K-Kids Club, and the Eliminate Project. The latter is a project of the National and  International Kiwanis and UNICEF for elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus.
