Florida in the Civil War Presentation

Estero Island Historic Society

Join the EIHS for its final public presentation of the season on Monday, April 8 at 7pm (doors open at 6:30) in the Community Room of the FMB Library! Eliot Kleinberg will present, “Florida in the Civil War? Believe it!” Free entry; donations welcome.

While Florida might be the most “northern” southern state now, it was the third to secede, and played a much more strategic role than most history books let on. Learn about Florida’s role in the Civil War blockade, its critical battles, the tragedy of its governor, the veterans who founded many Florida cities, and how some people are still fighting the war. And was the war the reason Florida has 21 million people?

Eliot Kleinberg was born in South Florida and has spent nearly four decades as a reporter, including more than a quarter-century at The Palm Beach Post in West Palm Beach. In addition to covering local news, he has written 10 books, all focusing on Florida.
