    DINNER DANCE

    The Knights of Columbus of Ascension Parish will host an Irish Rovers Dinner Dance on SA, Mar 23 in the Parish Hall, 6025 Estero Blvd., FMB. Doors open at 5:30pm. The evening will include a catered dinner followed by the music of Side-by-Side for your listening and dancing pleasure. Proceeds benefit Ascension K of C local charities.     ART GALLERY

    The Fort Myers Beach Art Association Gallery will host the art exhibition, “Anything Goes” from March 23 – April 4. From April 6 -10, the Student Scholarship Show will take place with the Awards Reception on SU, Apr 7 from 1-3pm. All are welcome to attend. The Summer Art Show will begin April 17. The FMBAA Gallery is located at 3030 Shell Mound Blvd, FMB. Hours are MO – SA 10am – 3pm through April 13. Summer Hours begin April 17, when the Gallery is open WE & TH from 9am – noon. Free admission.

    MAHJONG TOURNEY

    A Mahjong tournament will be held at Ascension Church Parish Hall on WE Mar 27 from 9am-3pm. All are invited to participate. More than 30 morning and afternoon prizes with a top prize of $100. Continental breakfast, lunch and catered desserts. Entry $45. Proceeds benefit the Ascension Woman’s Group charities. Registration deadline Mar 20.     OPEN FIREHOUSE

    The Fort Myers Beach Fire Department invites the community to join them for a Celebration Open House on SA Mar 30 from 11am – Noon at Station 33, 121 Lenell Rd, FMB. Come join your Fire Department in celebration of the district’s 70th Birthday and to honor Chief Matt Love’s recognition as the Lee County Fire Chief of the Year. Light refreshments will be provided.

    SONGWRITERS AT SUNSET

    Join the Friends of Lovers Key State Park for the final Songwriters at Sunset Beach BBQ and Free Acoustic Concert of the season on TH Apr 4. The Beach BBQ begins at 4:45pm; Concert at 5:45pm. Artists will be Ross Jordan, Bob Williams and Bill Metts. Come hear great original music and the stories behind the songs, then enjoy a fabulous Lovers Key sunset. Concert is free with paid park entry. Park entry fees are $8 for vehicles (2-8 people); $4 for single person in vehicle; $2 for pedestrians/bicyclists.

    CRUISERS DAY    

    Mark your calendar now for the 12th Annual Cruisers Appreciation Day on SA, Apr 6 from 12-3pm in the Matanzas on the Bay courtyard. Free admission for all with BBQ, live entertainment, drinks, door prizes and friendly Island hospitality – all to celebrate the cruisers who frequent the Fort Myers Beach mooring field.     FLORIDA IN THE CIVIL WAR

    Join the Estero Island Historic Society on Mo, Apr 8 at 7pm for a free presentation, “Florida in the Civil War? Believe it!” by Eliot Kleinberg. Learn about Florida’s role in the Civil War blockade, its critical battles, the tragedy of the governor, the veterans who founded many Florida cities and how some people are still fighting the war. And was the war the reason Florida now has 21 million people?

    KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP

    Beach Elementary School is looking for Kindergarten students on Estero Island or San Carlos Island who will be 5 years of age by September 1, 2019. They will hold their Annual Kindergarten Round-Up for the 2019-20 School Year at Fort Myers Beach Elementary School on Tuesday, April 9 from 9:30 am – 11 am. If your Kindergarten-aged child will be attending Fort Myers Beach Elementary for the 2019-20 School Year, please call the school office at 239-463-6356 to let them know you would like to join them for Roundup.

    LUAU ON THE BEACH

    Sign up now for the Friends of Lovers Key Luau on the Beach on TH April 11 from 5:30-8:30pm. The luau will include a pig roast, chicken, appetizers and dessert, plus dancing to steel drum music and games. Cost is $60/person for non-FOLKS members and $55/person for FOLKS members.     The Estero Island Historic Society has announced its first Garden Party fundraiser and celebration to be held on SA Apr 13 from 10am – 1pm at the Historic Cottages, 161 Bay Road, FMB.     ETHNOBOTANY

    Plan to visit Matanzas Pass Preserve on Wednesday mornings for the free guided walk, “Exploring Ethnobotany” at 9:30am with a Florida Master Naturalist. Learn about the historical importance of Florida native plants as food, shelter, medicine and clothing to humans past & present. Discover how indigenous plants were used by the Calusa and early settlers.

    BEACH KIDS SCHOLARSHIPS

    The Beach Kids Foundation is now accepting applications for its Scholarship Program. Applications are available by emailing Beachkidsfoundation@gmail.com or by calling
    239-980-0661 or 239-297-3500. All applications must be submitted by May 31, 2019. The Scholarship Award ceremony will be held June 17 at the Lani Kai Resort.

    SAVE BOTTLE CAPS

    The Fort Myers Beach Lions Club is collecting bottle caps to help Beach School acquire a Buddy Bench, which is made from recycled bottle caps. The Buddy Bench program is a successful national program that helps children who are isolated or bullied. Caps can be dropped off at the FMB Chamber Office, 2450 Estero Blvd, FMB. Acceptable caps include CLEAN caps from drink bottles, medicine, milk jugs, deodorant, flip-top bottles (ketchup, mustard), spray paint plus lids from cottage cheese containers, Peanut butter jars, yogurt, butter, detergent bottles. DO NOT bring them the bottles, just the caps/lids. Also no plastic bags, trigger sprayers, lotion pumps or fast food drink lids or caps or lids with recycle #1, 3, 6 or 7.

    MULHOLLAND AWARD

    The Marine Resources Task Force (MRTF) is an advisory board to the Fort Myers Beach Town Council is now seeking nominations for the annual Mulholland Award given to an individual, business or organization which promotes awareness, education and preservation of our community’s natural resources. The Mulholland award is for entities that demonstrate a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship. Winners’ names are engraved on the Mangrove Tree plaque in Town Council chambers. Stewardship is the voluntary conservation of natural habitat and wildlife by concerned citizens. Applications can be obtained at Town Hall or at fmbgov.com Applications must be received by March 31.

    LOVERS KEY YOGA

    The Friends of Lovers Key State Park offers Monday morning Yoga at the Gazebo on the beach at Lovers Key State Park at 9:30am every Monday through May. Instructor Sandy McShane provides an hour of Open Vinyasa Flow yoga for $10/class plus park entry fee. Participation helps to fund the future Welcome & Discovery Center. Bring a yoga mat, water and any props you need. Give yourself time to park and take the tram to the gazebo. Tram departs at 9 and 9:15am. For more info call Sandy 774-563-8874
