LEGION LABOR DAY
American Legion Post 274 will host their annual Labor Day Picnic/Barbecue on Mon Sept 5 beginning at 11am. Join them for some great fun, food and entertainment and bring the family! The fun includes a Dunk Tank, Mechanical Bull, Firecracker,” Cake Walk and more. Donations asked for bull riding. Plus lots of picnic food donated by Cheney Bros! Live music by SH Boom from 1-3pm and Chicago Heat from 4-6pm, who are donating their time to help raise money to benefit all veterans through Legion sponsored charities.
The first responders of Lee County will host a 9-11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sun Sept 11 at 8:30am at the Harborside Event Center, 1375 Monroe St, Fort Myers. The Fort Myers Beach Fire District will participate. A ceremony will be held on Fort Myers Beach at Fire Station 33, 121 Lenell Rd, on Sat Sept 10 at 7:15pm. The American Legion will also host a flag raising at 10am on Sept 11 at Post 274, 899 Buttonwood Dr.
END OF SUMMER PARTY
Islanders are invited to participate in The Cottage End of Summer Party on Sat Sept 17 from 3pm-close. There will be live music from three bands: Twisted Vinyls from 3-5:30pm, Two Steps from 6-8:30pm and Bad Banditos from 9pm-1am. This party to benefit the FMB New Years Eve Fireworks Fund will also have some great food and drink specials, raffles and 50/50 drawings.

A Nature Walk with a Bird Patrol Guide is offered on Sat Sept 3 at 8am at Lakes Regional Park, 7330 Gladiolus Dr. Meet at Shelter A7. This easy walk offers the opportunity to see birds in native vegetation with experienced guides pointing out the many species in Lakes Park. Free with paid parking. BEACH CUB SCOUTS
Cub Scouting is returning to the beach! An Informational Session will be held on Wed Sept 7 at 6:30pm at Beach Elementary School, hosted by James Laughlin, Panther District Executive, BSA, SWFL Council. Chapel by the Sea Presbyterian Church will sponsor the Cub Pack. Get details on what to expect and ask any questions about what is needed to get the Cub Pack restarted. BEAUTIFUL BIRDS OF BUNCHE BEACH
Experience the birds of Bunche Beach with a Bird Patrol Guide on Thu Sept 15 at 5:30pm. Bunche is an excellent spot for both migrant and resident waders and shorebirds working the mudflats at low tide. Also waterfowl, raptors and warblers. Free with paid parking. MOUND HOUSE EVENTS
Mound House is a unique archaeological and historical site on Fort Myers Beach located directly on Estero Bay and offers a variety of programs. MEET THE AUTHOR
The Friends of Lakes Regional Library will host author Tim Jacobs on Fri Sept 9 at 1pm at the Lakes Regional Library. Mr. Jacobs has written several books and numerous articles for magazines and newspapers, including the Island Sand Paper. He will discuss his latest book, a biography about a Civil War soldier. Join the Friends of Lovers Key State Park (FOLKS) for a 50’s-60’s Sock Hop on the Beach at Lovers Key State Park on Thu Sept 29 from 4-7pm. Join FOLKS at the gazebo for a fun-filled evening of 50’s and 60’s music, dancing and contests. Participate in the Hula Hoop contest, Best Outfit contest or Jitterbug contest. SHRIMP FEST DESIGN CONTEST
Calling all graphic designers – the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club is looking for a design for their 59th annual Shrimp Fest to be held March 11 & 12, 2017. The chosen design will be the face of the festival, appearing on t-shirts, ads, posters and more. The design must include images of Gulf shrimp, the official title of the festival (59th Annual Fort Myers Beach Lions Club Shrimp Festival), festival dates and the Lions Club logo. It must also fit on a t-shirt, etc. Submissions are due Wed Sept 21 in digital format. Winning design will be announced in early October. Multiple submissions are permitted. The Town of Fort Myers Beach is seeking members to serve on the Town’s advisory committees and boards. Islanders who wish to be considered for an open seat on any of the advisory boards is asked to submit a letter of interest with a brief summary of qualifications and a short bio by Wed Sept 21. Join the Friends of Lovers Key State Park (FOLKS) on Fri Oct 14 at 5pm for a Sunset/Moonlight paddle through the mangrove protected estuary inside the park. This 2-2.5 hour guided tour will transport you to old time Florida as you peacefully paddle around Black Island. A guide will appoint out wildlife and share interesting background information on the flora and fauna of the park. Hear about the pirate who lived on Black Island and his treasure. Cost includes park entry: $15 FOLKS members; $20 non-members, plus kayak rental: $38/single kayak; $58/double kayak. Rental costs will be donated back to FOLKS by Lovers Key Adventures.
