Doo Wop Festival Returns January 9

There will be dancin’ in the streets at the annual Doo Wop Festival on Saturday, January 9, held at Santini Marina Plaza at 7225 Estero Blvd from 9am-1pm. Do poodle skirts, ducktails, petticoats, saddle oxfords, drive-in movies, high school football games, Senior Prom, jukeboxes, 33 and 45 records, Howdy Doody or The Honeymooners ring a bell? Then get ready to kick off your shoes and dance.
The always-popular jitterbug contest will be held at 10:45am, with registration at 10am. To pre-register, call organizer Bonnie Roberts at 239-443-8810. Winners will be determined by audience applause, with trophy awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

“Baby Boomers, come ready to DANCE!” said Roberts, who started the event in 2011 because she wanted to do something fun for the baby boomer generation. “Whether you’re dancing or just strolling the market, you’ll enjoy the best music of the 50’s, as DJ Larry spins all those songs you remember.”

Roberts told us that she came up with the idea for the Doo Wop Festival when she realized how music really can transport folks back to another time, and how much fun it is to relive the dances of our youth.

“It occurred to me one day that every baby boomer has a moment where they can’t remember where their car keys are, but I can guarantee that we all know every word to every one of those songs,” she said, laughing. “Heck, I’ve been known to stop the car, get out and dance when ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ comes on the radio!”

Roberts promises great noshes by the Restaurants of Santini Marina Plaza plus over 40 arts and crafts vendors at the open-air bazaar.

“Margaritas and Bloody Mary’s will be served at the Skye’s booth as well as Skye’s specialty dishes,” Bonnie told us. “Francesco’s will be serving everything Italian from fresh Mozzarella to divine Italian Meatball Sandwiches. Truly Scrumptious will present their island-famous Lobster Roll along with the most delicious, Homemade Cakes and most amazing desserts ever.”

The Find A Home Give A Home Island Pet Rescue will hold a 50/50 raffle hourly and will welcome any pet food donations brought to the event.

Upcoming events include FMB Got Talent on February 13th and Smokin’ in the Mangroves BBQ Contest on March 5th, followed by the Classic Car Cruise-In on April 2nd. For more information on any Saturday Santini Plaza event, contact Bonnie Roberts at 239-443-8810.
