When I joined the Estero Island Garden Club, I was hoping to meet some friendly locals. My hopes were certainly fulfilled – I encountered a whole lot of very friendly people, who made me very welcome.
I soon realized that Garden Club members not only meet to talk about plants and flower arrangements, they are really involved in the community.
Garden Club members created and maintain the garden at Bay Oaks and the Times Square planters. They also look after the plantings around the Fort Myers Beach sign at the southern end of our island.
The large Christmas tree on the 3rd floor of the Library is decorated by Garden Club members every year. Members of the Garden Club provide ornaments for the tree, some of them hand crafted.
In my opinion one of the most useful Garden Club activities is working with Fort Myers Beach Elementary School. Several of our members helped the children create decorations for the children’s tree at the library. For many years members have gone to the school on Arbor Day to enthuse the children about planting trees. Recently the Elementary School obtained a grant for raised gardening beds and members are helping students design and plant their gardens. That is such a good idea!
The Estero Island Garden Club also arranges interesting talks and outings for members. We usually meet in the Community Room on the 3rd floor of the Library on the first Monday of every month at 9.30 am. New members are always welcome! For more information, call Carol, 312-320-7247.
Check out the Garden Club Yard Sale on Saturday, March 18th from 8am-1pm in Fairview Isles at the end of Clearview Blvd. There will be signs at the junction with Estero Blvd. There will not be just good clothes, but also lots of other interesting items. I’ve found some treasures in the past!
Hope to see you at the Garden Club!
