Candidate Guest Opinion: Ron Fleming

I am a candidate for the position of Commissioner, Seat 2, of the FMBFCD. I believe that I would be a very beneficial, encouraging and contributing team member of the fire commission. I employ a proactive, leadership style. I encourage and challenge team members to exceed their best efforts and achieve consensus resulting with increases in safety and efficiency.

I believe to be an effective commissioner/director it is obligatory that much more than a basic, elementary understanding of the organization’s function is essential, public or private. I bring to our district 37 years service with the Dayton, Ohio Fire Department, including 24 as an executive chief officer. I have been recognized with multiple valor awards as a line firefighter and junior officer. As a chief officer, I was awarded unit citations. I served in leadership positions on multiple projects. I established and modified programs that improved the safety of service delivery to the citizens and the firefighters alike. I also developed strategies that led to greater efficiency of operations saving the City of Dayton tens of thousands of dollars. These programs, developed years ago, are still in effect. Additionally, I researched and developed budgets and wrote the specifications for the purchase and acceptance of 11 various fire apparatus. Our district intends to replace its entire fleet within five years. I know I can offer knowledgeable assistance to the committee selected to accomplish this important task.

With the Dayton Firefighters Federal Credit Union, I bring to our commission 10 years of board of director experience including being the President of this $50M financial institution. As a board member, I collaborated with my peers in creating and modifying our goals/vision with specific focus on increasing and improving services to our membership while increasing the efficiency and morale of the employees.

As a commissioner, I understand and appreciate that the board of commissioners is not involved in the day-to-day operations of the fire department, just as with any other public or private organization. However, when there is a difference of opinion between labor and management, I believe I will understand exactly their rational for their positions and take appropriate action. My financial expertise will also be an asset for our district.

My formal education includes a Master of Public Administration and a BS in Management. Additionally, I am a Fellowship Graduate of the National Fire Academy, Emmitsburg, MD.
