Chris Patricca of Estero, parent of three students who attend Lee County Public Schools, Adjunct Professor of Justice Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University, and former Pinewoods Elementary School Paraprofessional, has declared her candidacy for Lee County School Board District 3.

“I am pleased to announce my candidacy for Lee County School Board District 3. During my time serving on Boards in my community and serving on Committees at the School District, I gained an understanding of the complexities of our School District, which educates 94,000 students, employs 11,000 people, operates 120 different schools and has a budget of nearly $1.4 Billion. My experience on Boards and Committees has taught me about good board governance and the importance of working as a member of a team.

“Most importantly, the primary role for a School Board member should be to ensure that students are the primary focus of all decision making. There are many issues that will come before us in the next four years. They include student achievement, diversification of curriculum, teacher retention, capital funding, student safety, and many more.

“Second, a School Board member should be an active listener in communications with students, parents, employees, taxpayers, and community leaders. As a member of the Beach Area Civic Association, I have gleaned some insight into what makes Fort Myers Beach so special. The Community is warm, inviting and unique. These characteristics are reflected in the environment at Fort Myers Beach Elementary. I want to work with the Beach community as the beloved Principal Wood retires and we transition to new leadership.

“The immediate issues before us continue to be building schools to keep up with student growth and exercising fiscal responsibility throughout the process. The new High School LLL in Bonita Springs will serve some students on the Beach. The voice of the Beach community is important in deciding the type of facility we will build and the educational programs that will be offered at High School LLL.

“I believe that education is at the heart of any thriving community. I will work hard to achieve our Superintendent’s stated goal of becoming the best School District in the nation.
