Jim Atterholt – Town Council

Jim Atterholt announced his intention this week, to run for Town Council in the March 17, 2020 election. Before moving to Fort Myers Beach (FMB) permanently, Atterholt served the State of Indiana in various roles including congressional aide, state legislator, insurance commissioner, chair of the utility regulatory commission and as chief of staff to the governor. “I have spent the last few weeks listening to a wide variety of folks across the island and I have been encouraged by those conversations,” said Atterholt. “My motivation for running for council is not because I am angry with anyone, have a hidden agenda or any axe to grind—I am simply interested in how I can best utilize my experience to continue to serve my community.  If given the privilege to serve, my governing philosophy will be one of limited government through civility, common sense and professionalism.”

Jim-Atterholt-FMb-Town-Council-CandidateAtterholt currently volunteers to serve FMB on the Local Planning Agency which assists the Town Council on zoning and planning issues. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and has been married to his college sweetheart, Brenda, for 32 years.  “Brenda and I are blessed to live directly on the beach and we experienced first-hand the horrific impacts of Red Tide last year,” said Atterholt. “There is rarely a day that we are not running, walking, swimming or biking along the beach. Both the environmental as well as the economic damage from Red Tide is seared in my memory. As the critical solutions to this problem are long term, I will be proposing some specific strategies over the coming months that the town can use to keep this issue at the forefront of our State and Federal policy makers.”

Atterholt expects to run a full-fledged campaign involving going door to door to hear from voters, putting up yard signs, sending direct mail and running newspaper ads. “I can assure voters there will be no negative attacks by me or my campaign. My vision for Fort Myers Beach is a very optimistic one and my campaign will be a reflection of that vision,” said Atterholt.
