Lions Club Seeks Bottle Caps
While the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club is busy getting ready for the Fort Myers Beach Shrimp Festival coming up on March 9 & 10, they continue all of their other charitable efforts, one of which is the Buddy Bench.
A Buddy Bench is a plastic bench made from recycled bottle caps that is designed to help children who have no friends to play with, or who feel isolated or bullied. Part of a national educational effort for school children as an anti-bullying campaign, children learn that a child sitting on a Buddy Bench is a signal to other children that they should include the child in their play. The Buddy Bench has been a very successful campaign across the country and the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club would like to implement it at Beach Elementary School.
To do so, they need to collect bottle caps that will be recycled into their own Buddy Bench. School children will be involved with collecting, sorting and weighing the caps to learn about recycling as well as bullying and the value of friendship.
The club is aiming to collect 200 pounds of bottle caps which will create a 6 foot bench. They ask the community to join them in this effort. Bottle caps can be dropped off at the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce office at 2450 Estero Blvd, Fort Myers Beach, any Monday – Friday from 9am – 5pm.
All caps must be clean. Just the caps from these items can be donated: Drink bottles, milk jugs, hair spray, deodorant, flip-top or spout bottles (ketchup, mustard), spray paint, detergent and caps with recycle #2, 4 & 5. Also collect clean lids from cottage cheese containers, mayonnaise, peanut butter jars, yogurt, butter, plus prescription bottles with labels removed can be donated.
DO NOT donate the bottles, just the CLEAN caps/lids. Also no caps with any metal, plastic or grocery bags, trigger sprayers, lotion pumps or fast food drink lids or caps or lids with recycle #1, 3, 6 or 7. No trash and no metal.
