KIDS FISHING TOURNAMENT
Ostego Bay Foundation will host the 25th Annual 4th of July Kid’s Fishing Tournament on SA July 1st at Bonita Bills Waterfront Café at 702 Fisherman’s Wharf on San Carlos Island. All kids are welcome to participate in this free tournament. Fishing starts at 9am and continues through noon with just three rules: One pole/child; one hook/pole and have fun! Lunch at noon of hot dogs, chips & cookies followed by the awards. All free for kids. Sponsored by Ostego Bay Foundation and area businesses.
Summer is swim lesson time. The Beach pool offers lessons for just $20 thanks to the support of the Beach Kiwanis Club’s “Every Child a Swimmer” program. The next weekday sessions will be June 26-July 7 and July 17-27. The next Saturday session will be July 29-Sept 2. For more information and class times call the pool at 239-463-5759.
Celebrate the life and generosity of Bruce Cermak at the “Love for Bruce” Day on SU July 2 starting at 1pm at the Surf Club. The day will include a Harry Chapin Food Drive and Luau, with free leis with any food donation. There will also be contests that will keep the fun rolling all afternoon. Hula Hoop, Limbo, Best Dressed Hawaiian. And free food – hot dogs, Chicago –style. Live music, guest bartenders, photo memories of Bruce. Bring your food donation starting at 1pm and honor the memory of this great guy who never met someone in need without helping.
The Beach Pool, located at Bay Oaks Recreation Center is now open 7 days a week. MO-SA 10am-6pm and SU 12-6pm. The inflatable Aqua Glide Obstacle course will be in the pool June 30-July 2. During the summer, it will be in place the first and last weekends of each month FR-SU. Water Aerobics is offered every MO, WE & FR from 9-10am. Cost is $4 for Bay Oaks members; $6 for non-members. SPIRIT OF ‘45
Sponsors are urgently needed for this annual tribute to WWII veterans! Area businesses and individuals are asked to consider becoming a sponsor so this program is able to continue to recognize area WWII veterans. Sponsorships start at just $50. The Spirit of ’45 event will be held SU August 13 from 4:15-7:15pm at the Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort. It includes a Color Guard, POW/MIA Service, Guest Speakers, Guns ‘N Hoses & bagpiper performances, several speeches by area veterans, Taps and more. 4th of July
Sign up now for the 10am FMB parade that will begin at Bay Rd and continue to Times Square. The Parks & Rec Dept will organize an American trivia contest and patriotic crafts fun along with a watermelon eating contest in Times Square from 1-3pm. Fireworks will begin between 9-9:15pm from the pier. The Matanzas Pass Bridge will be closed to all traffic from 9:15am-noon. It will close again from 9-11:30pm to traffic coming onto the island as they will use all lanes for exiting traffic after the fireworks. Mark your calendar for the morning after the big fireworks show because your help is needed for a beach clean-up on July 5th from 8-10am. Meet at the Times Square clock to get your gloves and bags to help our beach sparkle! Sponsored by the FMB Community Foundation and Keep Lee County Beautiful. Additional clean ups are planned for Bunche Beach and Dog Beach.

Join Island friends and family at Chapel by the Sea for an Italian Spaghetti Dinner on SA July 8 from 5-7pm in Silver Hall. On the menu: Spaghetti, meatballs, spicy sausage w/peppers & onion, salad, garlic bread, dessert, cold drinks & coffee. $10 adults; $5 kids under 10 and Public Safety Personnel in uniform or with ID. MATANZAS PASS PRESERVE
Islanders are invited to comment on the new 10-year management plan for Matanzas Pass Preserve. The plan has been updated to reflect the work done on the preserve site and is available for pubic review until July 18 at the Beach Library or online at bit.ly/mppnewplan A public meeting will be held on TU July 18 at 4:30pm at the Red Coconut Clubhouse, 3001 Estero Blvd, FMB. Beach Elementary School is participating in the federal Summer Food Service Program, “Summer Breakspot.” Any child age 18 and younger can receive a free meal at any Breakspot location. No forms, no cost. From June 5 through July 28, excluding July 4th, lunch will be offered at Beach School from 11am-12pm each Monday-Friday. It’s totally free, no sign up required. Estero Island’s oldest standing structure at the Mound House is now open as a cultural and environmental learning center. The Fort Myers Beach Library offers a cool respite from a busy day. Enjoy an hour browsing the library’s many collections or sign up for some time on the library’s computers. Anyone looking for a good beach read should stop by the Friends Used Book Store on the 3rd floor. Open MO-FR 9am-5pm; SA 9am-1pm.
