Biz Buzz: Fish-Tale Marina Changes Hands

A chapter in the history of an iconic Fort Myers Beach business recently ended, and a new chapter begun for Fish-Tale Marina on Fort Myers Beach. Barry Miller, left, Regional Manager for Southern Marinas joins Al and Kathy Durrett in this photo  memorializing the purchase of the Fish-Tale Marina by Southern Marinas on February 20, 2020, adding it to their existing Florida holdings, which include marinas in Stuart and Cortez Florida. Miller has operational management duties for all three marinas and comes to Fish-Tale with good familiarity with Fort Myers Beach due to his experience working with other marinas in SWFL. Miller said their group was impressed with the reputation for customer service that the Durretts have built over their 35 years of ownership, as well as the well-kept condition of the marina. Miller added that boaters should expect little or no change in local operations, and looks forward to getting to know the marina’s customers.

Al and Kathy Durrett will continue a busy local presence assisting Southern Marinas in the transition over the next several months. They will continue to manage Fish-Tale Waterfront Dining and Santini Marina Plaza. Al Durrett added, “The timing was good for Kathy and I to step back from the business, and take some responsibilities off our plate.” Then he added, “We are not really going anywhere.”

Southern Marinas Holdings, LLC, a partnership between a New York-based private investment firm and Southern Marinas, announced today the purchase of Fish-Tale Marina in Fort Myers Beach, Florida on February 20, 2020.

Ideally located within the pristine Estero Bay aquatic preserve on Fort Myers Beach with easy access to the Gulf of Mexico, Fish-Tale Marina has been creating extraordinary boating experiences since 1958. The marina has been recognized as a “Clean & Resilient Marina” and has set the standard for protecting marine resources and promoting environmental stewardship. The full-service marina encompasses 244 dry stack slips, 80 wet slips, a fuel dock, ship’s store, boat tours, charter operations, restaurant and service center.

For 35 years, Fish-Tale Marina has been owned and operated by Al and Kathy Durrett. Through their shared vision and execution, the marina has become a fixture within the Fort Myers Beach boating community. Al and Kathy Durrett will remain onboard as part of the management team to ensure a seamless transition. They will also remain an integral part of the community as they will continue to own and operate Fish-Tale Restaurant.

“We are very fortunate that the Durrett family selected Southern Marinas to continue their legacy at Fish-Tale Marina,” said Andrew Gendron, principal and chief investment officer with Southern Marinas. “Fish-Tale Marina is the perfect addition to our growing portfolio of marinas that will expand our footprint in the Florida market.”

This purchase will mark Southern Marinas’ first acquisition in 2020, as the company continues to build a strong portfolio of best-in-class marinas in the Southeast and other strategically located geographic regions of the country.
