Bernadette Hamera Wins Berne Davis Honorary Service Award

The Garden Council of Fort Myers-Lee County recently honored long-time Estero Island Garden Club member Bernadette Hamera with the Seventh Annual Berne Davis Honorary Service Award. Each year the award is made to an outstanding member of a Garden Club or Society who excels in community service, special projects and activities within their garden clubs or societies. The Garden Council is an umbrella organization for over 20 garden clubs, 8 plant societies and 2 affiliates totaling over 1800 members.

Bernadette was Treasurer for the Estero Island Garden Club for a number of years and is presently the Treasurer for District IX of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. She is a member of the SW Florida Orchid Society and a tireless campaigner against pollution of our waterways. She is presently the First VP of the Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council and will succeed to the Presidency in 2017. Above all else, Bernadette is a good gardener who tends friendships as she would tend flowers in the garden of her life.

Among her many interests, Berne Davis, a legendary Fort Myers philanthropist, spent a lifetime promoting gardening and garden clubs. In 2010, she presented the First Annual Berne Davis Honorary Service Award to Lois Gressman, also a member of the Estero Island Garden Club. This year, Bernadette received the crystal vase which has the “Tree of Life” etched into the crystal.
