Join an experienced Bird Patrol Guide in Lakes Park, 7330 Gladiolus Dr, Fort Myers, on SA May 6 at 8am for Morning Meander, an easy walk along clear paths with an opportunity to see birds in native vegetation. Lakes Park is a birding hot spot and crucial nesting area for many birds. Wear comfortable shoes and dress to be outside. Bring water, sunscreen and binoculars. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SUNDAY
Be a part of Taste of the Beach by volunteering! Volunteers are needed from 10:30 am until 4pm On SU May 7. There are two shifts: 10:30-1:30 and 1:30-4:00. Check in at the Main gate (OSC and 3rd street). Volunteers will be checking people in at the two gates, selling food and drink tickets, checking ID’s, set up, clean up and assisting with guest questions. Volunteers will receive 10 free tickets, free entry and bottled water. The Chamber can provide a letter for any volunteer that needs documented hours (students).
TASTE OF THE BEACH
Enjoy some of the best food on FMB at the Chamber of Commerce’s Taste of the Beach on SU May 7 on Old San Carlos Blvd from 11am-4pm. The best restaurants on the and near the beach will be offering small tastes of their best items for sale. Music by Jo List & Friends from 12-4pm. Beer tent operated by Friends of the Arts supporting arts on FMB. Entry is $5 for ages 12 and over; Children under 12 free. Food tickets are $1 each with most food items about $5 each.
ONE LANE TRAFFIC AHEAD
Motorists can expect one-lane traffic during nighttime/overnight hours from 6pm – 7am SU May 7 through TU May 9 while crews mill & pave Estero Boulevard from Carolina Avenue (Hooters) to Lovers Lane (Sea Grape Plaza). Flaggers will alternate traffic frequently, but motorists should expect delays at night. Subject to change.
MEET YOUR COUNCIL
The Estero Island Taxpayers Association (EITA) invites Islanders to the first in a series, “Meet Your Council,” on TU May 9 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Fort Myers Beach Woman’s Club, 175 Sterling Ave, FMB. The first meeting of this summer series will feature Mayor Dennis Boback.
BEAUTIFUL BIRDS OF BUNCHE BEACH
Experience the birds of Bunche Beach with a Bird Patrol Guide on TH May 11 at 5:30pm. Bunche is an excellent spot for both migrant and resident waders and shorebirds working the mudflats at low tide. PROTECT OUR TURTLES
It’s turtle nesting season on our beach. Please do your part to protect the turtles, nests and hatchlings when they emerge! Shield your lights so that they are not visible from anywhere on the beach. Better yet, replace existing bulbs with Amber LED bulbs! Find lights here: bit.ly/turtlelites. Stack or remove beach furniture. Remove beach litter. Keep pets on a leash. Stay far away from any turtles or marked nests you may encounter! Fill in any holes you dig in the sand. Please remember, your actions can mean life or death to endangered sea turtles! The 10th Annual Lovers Key Turtle Trot 5K Run/Walk will be held on SA May 13 with an 8am start. A unique trail course over a hard-packed shell path, takes runners through a shady maritime hammock ecosystem. No running through beach sand. $35 adults; $25 youth (18 and under) through May 13. The 25th annual National Letter Carrier Food Drive will be held on SA, May 13 this year. Each year postal carriers and volunteers collect food donations to stock food pantries for the difficult summer months. On May 13, donations of unopened and unexpired food in unbreakable containers can be left by your mailbox for collection. Seasonal residents are urged to clear out their cabinets before they leave and drop off unopened and unexpired food at their local post office anytime before May 13. All food is welcome, but items especially needed are peanut butter, tuna, rice, beans, canned meat, fruit, vegetables and soup.
Join Island friends and family at Chapel by the Sea for an Italian Spaghetti Dinner on SA May 13 from 5-7pm in Silver Hall. On the menu: Spaghetti, meatballs, spicy sausage w/peppers & onion, salad, garlic bread, dessert, cold drinks & coffee. $10 adults; $5 kids under 10 and Public Safety Personnel in uniform or with ID. The BBQ feast that Islanders know and love as Popeyepalooza returns to the beach to benefit Island kids on SU May 21 at the Beach Pub beginning at noon. Expect live music all day, prizes, raffles, silent auctions and of course, great Popeye BBQ. Businesses or individuals wishing to donate prizes for the auction are asked to call Popeye at 239-244-4437.
