Last summer the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club asked the community to participate in a contest to select the official logo for the 59th annual Fort Myers Beach Shrimp Festival. For the first time, the contest was open to students at Beach Elementary.
Celia LaCorte, a fifth grade student at Beach Elementary won the contest by popular vote. Her design includes the pier at sunset and pink shrimp. Working on the design for over a week, she captured the rays of the sun, the pier, blue water and of course Pink Gold shrimp!
“It’s pretty at sunset,” Celia explained.
This was the first year that the Lions Club opened up the contest to the school, said Paula Schuttera, Lions club secretary. One of the club’s goals is to get more involved with the local community. The club has also become a sponsor of the Beach School Parent-Teacher Organization. “Many of our current members are seasonal residents or unable to be very active in community projects,” Schuttera said. “The members that are able would like to connect and become true partners with other entities.”
The Shrimp Festival will be held March 11 & 12.
One early event on March 4th at 8am is the Lions Kids Shrimp Run, held at Gulf Beach Road and the beach. It’s a free run down the beach with shrimp Princesses handing out awards. 239-481-2233.
The 5K Shrimp Run will start and finish at Doc Ford’s on March 11th.
