    Put your non-perishable food donations at your mailbox on SA May 14th. Volunteers will collect it for local food banks in the 24th annual National Letter Carrier Food Drive.



    The effort to save 4th of July Fireworks on Fort Myers Beach continues! On SU May 15th, the Lani Kai will host a Luau themed beach party fireworks fundraiser with games, prizes, silent auction and more! The Fish Monger will host an End of Stone Crab Season Party on SU, May 15th from 2-7pm. They have 300 lbs of stone crab just for this event! A Stone Crab eating contest will award a prize of free ½ lb of stone crab each week of the entire next stone crab season.

    A Children’s Piano Recital will be held at Chapel by the Sea on SU, May 22 at 1pm in the Sanctuary. Students from the Michael and Elena Melnikov Piano Studio will perform. Come enjoy some beautiful music by these young musicians in this family-oriented entertainment showcasing young talent. A reception follows in Silver Hall.

    Matanzas on the Bay will host the 3rd annual Bluegrass, Brew & BBQ event on SA May 28 from 11am-10pm to benefit Operation Open Arms (OAA). The event will feature live music with the Bugtussle Ramblers from 1-4pm and the Cooter Creek Bluegrass Band from 5-8pm, craft beer from the Fort Myers Brewing Company, face painting for children and a $15 BBQ buffet from 12-8pm, featuring ribs, smoked pork shanks, potato salad and corn on the cob. OAA is a non-profit dedicated to the care and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in military personnel and veterans. Free boat dockage. 416 Crescent St., FMB.



    High school seniors living in the 33931 zip code area planning to attend college or vocational school are invited to apply for a $2000 scholarship offered by the FMB Kiwanis Club. Scholarship funds can be used for tuition, books, room & board at the vocational technical school, college or university of choice. Details and applications available at Deadline July 15, 2016



    The Fort Myers Beach Lions are now accepting applications for their 2016 “WE SERVE” scholarships. Cash awards for college or vocational educational assistance are given to local students who demonstrate ability, need and a solid record of community service. Applications for this year’s students can be found on the Fort Myers Beach Lions Website: Please make sure you receive an e-mail confirmation after you send in the application. All completed applications must be postmarked no later than June 10th, 2016.

    The Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve will sponsor a Coastal Module of the Florida master naturalist Program this fall. The program will have six class sessions on Tuesdays, Oct 18 – Nov 22. The program will include class sessions, presentations and field trips. Field trips will include the Lovers’ Key Beach, Matanzas Pass Preserve, Bunche Beach Bird Walk, Mound Key and the Estero Bay Buffer Preserve. Three scientists will lecture on subjects including beach dynamics, sea level rise and the formation of barrier islands. Classes will be held at Newton House on Fort Myer Beach.     The Veterans Club of America (VCA), located at 16701 San Carlos Blvd., will be observing the 150th Anniversary of Memorial Day on Monday, May 30th at 11am. Ceremonies will include a bugler, bagpipes and the VCA Honor Guard. Iona-McGregor Fire Department will be in attendance. Speeches by VCA Commander George Rook, Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott and Eagle Scout Jacob Peters, Troop 714. Following the ceremony, a complimentary lunch will be provided by Mission BBQ. This event is open to the public and families are welcome. Please take a moment from your day to join us in reflection of the brave sacrifices of those who have given their lives for this great nation.



    Post 10097 of the VFW will hold a Memorial Day event on Monday, May 30th at 11am. Honor guard and speakers will participate and Eternal Wreaths will be donating memorials, inscribed with the names of crewmembers lost in the crash of a B-26 in the Gulf in 1942.     The 2015 Lee County Delicious Dining Discounts Book from the Kiwanis Club of Fort Myers Gateway to the Islands is now available for just $25. The book offers BOGO (By One, Get One) dining discounts at 64 area restaurants, including 12 FMB locations. Most off-season discounts are valid Apr 15-Nov 15, so pick up yours soon. The project supports Kiwanis youth-related projects including the Gladiolus Learning and Development Center, Healthy Start, United Way reading Program and Human Trafficking Awareness Program.
