    It’s turtle nesting season on our beach. Please do your part to protect the turtles,  nests and hatchlings when they emerge! Shield your lights so that they are not visible from anywhere on the beach. Better yet, replace existing bulbs with Amber LED bulbs! Find lights here: Stack or remove beach furniture. Remove beach litter. Keep pets on a leash. Stay far away from any turtles or marked nests you may encounter! Fill in any holes you dig in the sand. Please remember, your actions can mean life or death to endangered sea turtles! Report injured turtles by calling Turtle Time at 239-481-5566.



    The effort to save Fireworks on Fort Myers Beach continues! On SU May 15th, the Lani Kai will host a Luau themed beach party fireworks fundraiser with games, prizes, silent auction and more! The Cottage/GulfShore Grill and Tuckaway Café have already held fundraisers. Do your part to save fireworks!     The 10th Annual Lovers Key Turtle Trot 5K Run/Walk will be held on SA May 14 with an 8am start. A unique trail course over a hard-packed shell path, takes runners through a shady maritime hammock ecosystem. No running through beach sand. $35 adults; $25 youth (18 and under) through May 13. Day of race $40. First 500 get t-shirts. Register at Packet pick up and registration at 7am.



    Matanzas on the Bay will host the 3rd annual Bluegrass, Brew & BBQ event on SA May 28 from 11am-10pm to benefit Operation Open Arms (OAA). The event will feature live music with the Bugtussle Ramblers from 1-4pm and the Cooter Creek Bluegrass Band from 5-8pm, craft beer from the Fort Myers Brewing Company, face painting for children and a $15 BBQ buffet from 12-8pm, featuring ribs, smoked pork shanks, potato salad and corn on the cob. OAA is a non-profit dedicated to the care and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in military personnel and veterans. Free boat dockage. 416 Crescent St., FMB.



    The Fort Myers Beach Lions are now accepting applications for their 2016 “WE SERVE” scholarships. Cash awards for college or vocational educational assistance are given to local students who demonstrate ability, need and a solid record of community service. Applications for this year’s students can be found on the Fort Myers Beach Lions Website: Please make sure you receive an e-mail confirmation after you send in the application. All completed applications must be postmarked no later than June 10th, 2016.



    Author Martha Kendall will be the guest speaker at the Friends of the Lakes Regional Library meeting on FR May 13 at 1pm. Her book, “The Plant World of the Calusa – A View from Pineland,” describes the plants used by the Calusa and is illustrated with original watercolor paintings. A book signing will follow the discussion. All are welcome to attend this free event. 15290 Bass Road.

    Estero Island Historic Society Historic Cottage is open each WE and SA from 10am-12 noon. Learn local history through photographs and memorabilia. Local history books are available for purchase. Located at 199 Bay Rd at the entrance to Matanzas Pass Preserve. Turn at the Library.



    The 24th annual National Letter Carrier Food Drive will be held SA May 14. Letter carriers will collect non-perishable food that has been left by mailboxes. Any visitors heading north before then can drop their food off in the lobby of the FMB Post Office, where a table has been designated for donations.     Mound House is a unique archaeological and historical site on Fort Myers Beach located directly on Estero Bay and offers a variety of programs for local residents, visitors and school groups. Experience this one of a kind museum that sits atop a 2,000 year old Calusa Indian Shell Mound. Open TU-SA 9am-4pm through Apr 30th.     Keep children safe around water! Let the Beach Pool teach them to swim.

    Beach Pool and the FMB Kiwanis Club are joining forces to provide American Red Cross Swim Lessons for children ages 6 months and up. Fees for each session are $40, but the Kiwanis will pay $20 for children under the age of 18, making the cost only $20! The next series of lessons begin May 7th for Saturday sessions and June 13th for MO-TH sessions. To schedule swim lessons, call 239-463-5759 or stop by the pool.



    High school seniors living in the 33931 zip code area planning to attend college or vocational school are invited to apply for a $2000 scholarship offered by the FMB Kiwanis Club. Scholarship funds can be used for tuition, books, room & board at the vocational technical school, college or university of choice. Details and applications available at Deadline July 15, 2016.



    Estero Bay Wading and Diving Bird Nest Monitoring and Protection Program Staff and volunteers conduct monthly monitoring of nesting birds on 20 islands in Estero Bay. Nests are counted from a boat and identified by species and nesting stage. Lovers Key location dates: May 11 and June 15. Estero Bay location: May 17 and June 16. Back up dates: May 18 and June 20. All trips begin at 9am. Backup times are scheduled in case of cancellations for either of the primary times.



    The FMB Shrine Club will hold a Flea Market every SU from 7am-3pm beginning May 15th at 19171 San Carlos Blvd, FMB. Space (10’ x 10’) is available for a $10 donation. Bring your own tent, tables and chairs or rent a table for $5. New/old items, arts & crafts, farmers market vendors welcome. To reserve a space email Proceeds benefit the FMB Shrine Club.
