The 29TH Annual American Sand Sculpting Championships begin this weekend on the beach at Wyndham Garden Hotel, 6890 Estero Blvd. Open daily Nov 20-29 from 10am-5pm with activities each day. The Master Solo Competition begins FR Nov 20 with awards on SU Nov 23. Make A Wish day is FR Nov 20. Each day features sand sculpting lessons, live music, Quick Sand competitions and much more. The Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve will conduct their monthly “By the Light of the Moon” program on WE Nov 25 beginning at 5:10pm. Participants will experience 90 minutes in the preserve as they sharpen their senses of smell, touch, hearing and night vision-gaining an appreciation of nature in the dark. The Paradise Coastmen will present their Christmas Concert TU, Dec 1 at 7pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church. The program by the popular 20-voice chorus will be a festive evening of holiday favorites in their four-part barbershop harmonies. Islanders wanting a first look at the conceptual design of a proposed downtown redevelopment are invited to attend a joint meeting of the Fort Myers Beach Town Council and the Lee County Board of Commissioners to be held MO Nov 30 from 1-4pm at Florida Southwestern State College, 8099 College Parkway, Nursing Building (AA), Fort Myers. Interested parties are invited to attend, however, no public comment will be taken at the meeting. Additional meetings will be scheduled on Fort Myers Beach.

CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE
The Greater Fort Myers Beach Christmas Boat Parade will light up Fort Myers Beach on Dec 5 beginning at 6pm from Salty Sam’s Marina. Decorated and illuminated boats will navigate the back bay on a 2-hour cruise as thousands gather to watch the parade. Vessels will assemble at 5:45pm by the docks at Salty Sam’s Marina, At 6pm the boat parade will begin, passing Parrot Key Caribbean Grill and Bootleggers before cruising past Doc Ford’s and Bonita Bill’s on their way to the first two channels in Siesta Bay. Boats then head toward Bowditch Point, turning in front of the Pink Shell Marina and heading past Nervous Nellie’s and Matanzas Inn before finishing at Salty Sam’s for the Winners Circle Party at Bootleggers. Entry is $25/individual boat; $50/business boat. Sponsorships are available for $100. Salty Sam’s is offering free overnight dockage to participants with advance registration. FLORIDA NATURALIST TRAINING
The Coastal Systems segment of Florida Naturalist Training will be offered at Newton House and sponsored by Friends of Matanzas Pass Preserve beginning in January. Classes will meet for one full day for six successive weeks beginning Jan 12. Students will learn about Florida ‘s natural systems, of the plants and animals that depend on those systems, through classroom, field trips and practical experience. This module provides instruction on the general ecology, habitats, vegetation, wildlife and conservation issues of Coastal Systems in Florida. Register at masternaturalist.org. GREAT OUTDOOR ADVENTURE DAY
Lovers Key State Park will host their Annual Great Outdoor Adventure Day on SA Dec 5 from 10am-3pm at the Kayak Launch/Picnic Area of the park. Food, touch tanks, children’s activities plus Ranger-led programs will highlight a fun-filled day geared toward encouraging participants to recreate responsibly while enjoying the park’s unique habitats and wide variety of wildlife. Rangers and volunteers will offer opportunities to see the park through programs such as guided kayak tours, paddleboard clinics, walking nature tours, bike tours *bike/helmets provided by Billy’s Bikes), geo-caching, fishing clinics and more. Free with park entry. Kaya tours $10/person includes kayak rental.
SONGWRITERS AT SUNSET
A new concert series begins TU Dec 8 at Lover’s Key State Park when 3 local musicians Bob Covington, Boyd Baker and Bob Williams will perform in the inaugural Songwriters at Sunset Concert. The Friends of Lovers Key (FOLKS) has joined with the Americana Community Music Association to offer a series of free monthly Acoustic concerts featuring all original music this season.
