    FIREWORKS SUPPORT

    The effort to save 4th of July Fireworks on Fort Myers Beach continues! On SA Apr 23, Tuckaway Café will donate 50% of their sales that day to the effort. They are open from 7am-2pm, so stop in and enjoy a bagel sandwich or coffee and help the effort. Anyone interested in contributing may send a check payable to FMB Fireworks Fund to the FMB Chamber of Commerce, 1661 Estero Blvd, Suite 8, Dort Myers Beach, FL 33931 or visit the Facebook page at FMB Fireworks Fund or the GoFundMe account of the same name, or email jacquelee99@gmail.com.     EARTH DAY TRASH BASH

    Volunteers are invited to participate in the Great American Cleanup aka Earth Day Trash Bash on SA Apr 23 from 9am-noon at Beach Elementary, Bunche Beach or Dog Beach. For more information visit klcb.org.

     

    BIRD STEWARD TRAINING

    Beach-nesting Bird Steward Training will be offered SA Apr 23 from 9-11am at Lovers Key State Park. Park at the Tram circle and take it to the Gazebo area. Participants will be admitted to park free. RSVP LeeShorebirdSteward@gmail.com On SU Apr 24 the same training will be offered at Tigertail Beach on Marco Island.     LIONS’ SCHOLARSHIPS

    The Fort Myers Beach Lions are soliciting candidates for their 2016 “WE SERVE” scholarships. Cash awards for college or vocational educational assistance are given to local students who demonstrate ability, need and a solid record of community service. Applications for this year’s students can be found on the Fort Myers Beach Lions Website: fmblions.com. Please make sure you receive an e-mail confirmation after you send in the application. All completed applications must be postmarked no later than June 10th, 2016.

     

    BOOK SIGNINGS

    Author Christopher Bowron will be signing copies of his new book, “Devil in the Grass” at Annette’s Book Nook in Santini Plaza from 10am-2pm on SA Apr 23. His debut novel is a fast-paced tale of a young man trying to get his life straightened out as he sinks deeper into the south Florida muck. The author uses his knowledge of the area from growing up on FMB to lend authenticity to the tale. More information available at christopherbowron.com

     

    Naples author Mary Lee Gutwein will be signing copies of her book, “Party of Three at the Palace of Blue” at Annette’s Book Nook on SA Apr 30 from 1-3pm. This is the story of Lucy, the King, Queen Amy and Princess Lindy and their efforts to hold a party that turns into a family gathering with Bible readings for a sweet time in the shade of their backyard.

     

    K of C DONATES TO VETERANS

    Members of the local Knights of Columbus Council at Church of the Ascension along with K of C Assembly 2542 in Bonita Springs, recently presented a donation of $1,000 to Hearts and Homes for Veterans, Inc. in Fort Myers. The Assembly is the 4th degree of the Knights (aka the Patriotic Degree) and has as its primary goal the support of our local Veterans in need of assistance.

    Hearts and Homes for Veterans supports homeless and low income Veterans and is currently looking for donations so that they can complete their facility in downtown Ft. Myers to provide ongoing support for our Veterans. H&H4Vets is a 501c3 corporation and all donations are tax deductible.     TASTE OF THE BEACH

    Mark Sunday, May 1, 2016 on your calendar – The 21st Annual Taste of the Beach will bring tasty treats and fun times to San Carlos Blvd as over 16 local restaurants compete for Best of the Beach honors from 11am-4pm. Admission is $5 for adults and children over 12. Food tickets are $1 each with the average plate $5. Volunteers are needed SA 4/30 from 6-8pm for set up and SU 5/1 from 1:30-4pm for ticket sales.     YOGA FOR RUNNERS

    A Yoga for Runners workshop will be offered on SU May 1 from 2-4:30pm. Brittany Speakman will teach participants how to avoid injuries, provide a “before and after running” yoga routine and poses to balance areas commonly unbalanced in runners.     BEAUTIFUL BIRDS OF BUNCHE BEACH

    Experience the birds of Bunche Beach with a Bird Patrol Guide on WE May 4  at 5pm. Bunche is an excellent spot for both migrant and resident waders and shorebirds working the mudflats at low tide. Also waterfowl, raptors and warblers. Free with paid parking.     PUBLIC RECORDS WORKSHOP

    Lee County Clerk of Court Linda Doggett will present a public seminar, The Value of Searching Records and Online Service on WE Apr 27 from 1:30-3:30pm at the Bonita Springs Library, 26876 Pine Ave, Bonita Springs. Public Records are not only useful to businesses and organizations, but can help individuals make better-informed decisions in daily life.. Learn how to search for copies of deeds and mortgages, review court records of prospective employees, tenants, contractors and doctors & pay traffic tickets online. The seminar is free.     MOUND HOUSE EVENTS

    Mound House is a unique archaeological and historical site on Fort Myers Beach located directly on Estero Bay and offers a variety of programs for local residents, visitors and school groups.     SONGWRITING CONTEST

    Organizers of the inaugural Mother’s Day/Mother Earth Rhythm of the Island Festival, to be held Saturday, May 7th are seeking original songs about our Island. The festival is a celebration of our island and original, never-recorded songs are eligible. Songwriters are asked to email an MP3 version of the song, sung by the songwriter, before April 30 to MRTFFMB@gmail.com. Use the same email for more information on the contest.

     

    LOVERS KEY STATE PARK

    PLANT SALE

    The Lakes Park Fragrance Garden will host the season’s final plant sale from 9am-Noon Apr 27th at Lakes Regional Park, 7330 Gladiolus Dr, Fort Myers. Most of the plants for sale have been grown in the Fragrance garden from cuttings or seed, so visitors can see the mature plant in its natural setting. Selection includes succulents, small trees, native plants, herbs, bromeliads, roses, spider lily bulbs and more. Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions. $1/hr parking with max of $5/day.
