Area Kiwanis Clubs Gather

Children Priority One

Representatives of several SWFL area Kiwanis Clubs gathered last Thursday, January 16, for a Division Council Meeting on Fort Myers Beach, hosted by the Fort Myers Beach Kiwanis Club at Chapel by the Sea.

Five Kiwanis clubs were represented, including Fort Myers Beach, Cape Coral, Fort Myers-Edison, Lehigh, Metro-McGregor and Pine Island. Each club shared some of their recent activities. Fort Myers-Edison partnered with Perkins for The Giving Tree this past holiday season, resulting in over 6,000 gifts delivered to the elderly. The Cape Coral club gave out $293,000 in scholarships and hosted a Christmas Party for special needs students. They also plan to donate world atlases to every fourth grader in Cape Coral. The Metro-McGregor Kiwanis Club sponsors a breakfast for the children at Johns-Hopkins and BUG (Bringing Up Grades) awards. Pine Island sponsors PILOT (Pine Island Leaders of Tomorrow) and are building a new playground. The local Fort Myers Beach Kiwanis Club distributed $40,000 in scholarships, $20,000 to Golisano Children’s Hospital, atlases to every fourth grader at the Beach School and continues to help needy families in its community. Each Kiwanis Club sponsors at least one of the Kiwanis school-based clubs and sports teams in its community. Hearing about all this local Kiwanis activity reminded club members what Kiwanis is about: Children Priority One.

The Fort Myers Beach Kiwanis Club runs the Kiwanis Thrift Store at Summerlin Rd and Pine Ridge Road (11050 Summerlin Square Drive, Fort Myers Beach). The club welcomes new members and/or store volunteers (4-hour shifts). Visit the store for more information about the club or volunteering at the store, or call 239-454-8090 or visit

Upcoming meetings of the FMB Kiwanis Club, held at Bonita Bill’s meeting room, 702 Fishermans Wharf, FMB, are scheduled on Friday, Feb 7 at 7:30am; Thursday Feb 13 at 11:30am and Thursday February 20 at 5:30pm.
