Arbitrary Illusions, the first judged show of the season opened November 17 at the Fort Myers Beach Art Association’s (FMBAA) main gallery, sponsored by the Red Coconut. The show will continue through December 5. The show features FMBAA members’ artwork, judged by artist and professor Francesco Gillia. During the November 17 art show reception, Christine Reichow and Cheryl Fausel gave a very informative gallery talk about the art of judging. Both Christine and Cheryl are well accomplished artists and members of many prestigious art societies.

The Best of Show, in memory of Lee Ackert, FMBAA President from 1983 to 1985, went to Cheryl Fausel for “A Bag of Flowers.” First prize went to Nancy Morgan for “Viewer Favorites.”  JoAnn LaPadula was awarded second Prize for “On the Vine.”  Third prize went to Floyd Lawrence for “Beach Cottage.” Julie Nusbaum received the Maya Bryant Award (outdoor painter) for “Puerto de San Miguel.” Dorothy McDowell received the Gretchen Johnson Memorial Award for “Lighthouse View.”

Merit Awards were awarded to the following: “Wild Horses” by Pam Flaherty and “View From Room #249” by Bob Mueller. Honorable Mentions went to: “Back Bay” by Phyllis Abedi and “Oak Park” by Patricia Payzant.

The Quick Draw Event on Wednesday, November 6 was a success and the following awards were presented: Best Representation of Times Square went to Patricia Payzant and Best Representation of the Beach to Julie Nusbaum.

Studio 2 will feature a show by Floyd Lawrence and Donna Bergeron from Nov. 22 – Dec.5. The annual Art Divine sale of original art priced at or below $150 begins on December 8, with a free public reception on December 11 from 5:30-7:00pm.

Many short workshops are available at the Fort Myers Beach Art Association this season for those interested in learning to paint. Cheryl Fausel is teaching beginning and intermediate watercolor classes on Mondays. Check out the website at to see all the exciting artistic events happening this season. The FMBAA gallery is located at 3030 Shell Mound Blvd, FMB. The gallery is open Monday – Saturday from 10 am -3pm.
