Upcoming Beach Happenings

Looking for something fun to do for this time of year? Despite the fact that September has long been known for being the quietest time of year, there are two events happening over the next two Saturdays that are sure to be fun and both are for great causes.

John Allender Benefit

This Saturday, September 10th, islanders are once again asked to circle their wagons around one of our own when the Beach Pub hosts a fundraiser for long-time island musician John Allender, who was badly injured in a car accident on August 13th.

Allender, who has been performing on the island for nearly two decades and is well known for his amazing chops on blues guitar, remains in critical condition after being hit by a car while walking across U.S. 41 in Fort Myers. His situation prompted friends and family to create a benefit for him at the Beach Pub, where he’s been playing regularly for years.

Beginning at 11am, owners Lou and Dina Caleca will welcome islanders and friends of Allender’s with tasty treats, raffles for hotel stays, gift certificates and more, 50/50 raffles and – of course – live music. Over the years, John has been a part of the legendary Casey’s Houserockers, the John Allender Blues Band and many more, so expect to see surprise guest appearances from many island rockers.

Anyone wishing to donate prizes for raffles or who wants to offer a monetary donation is asked to call the Beach Pub at 239-765-6102. A GoFundMe account has also been set up to help pay for medical bills – go to GoFundMe.com/johnallenderfund.

End of Summer Party & Fireworks Fundraiser

A week from this Saturday, on September 17th, The Cottage will host a fundraiser for the Fort Myers Beach Fireworks Fund, which began earlier this year after the Town cut funding for the twice-annual displays on the Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve.

“This event will be from 3pm until 1am, and will feature live music from Twisted Vinyl (3-5:30pm); Two Steps (6-8:30pm) and The Bad Banditos from 9pm to 1am,” said Cottage Manager Johnna Sohner. “We’re going to have food and drink specials all day and raffles from 3-9pm.”

Johnna told us those raffles will include 50/50’s – which people need to be present for – and raffles for items like gift certificates, TV’s, hotel stays and more, that do not require the ticket buyer to be there at the time of the raffle.

“We’ve got some great stuff, including a one-week hotel stay in Costa Rica,” she said. “So make sure to come out for a great time!”

Anyone interested in contributing to the fireworks fund may send a check payable to FMB Fireworks Fund to: FMB Chamber of Commerce, 1661 Estero Blvd. Suite 8, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33931. People can also visit the Facebook page at FMB Fireworks Fund and the GoFundMe account under the same name.
